This is an attempt to detoxify a fan base that has been angry and hurting for some time now. Each and every one of us is here for a reason, and it’s not because Star Wars is just a movie. I hope to believe people have invested their time on social media to this story, characters and cast because it meant something to them, and it has meant so much to some that emotions have shown themselves in good and negative ways. Unfortunately, the negative has gotten too loud for anyone to really hear any of the good. There is a lot of love in this fandom, and it would be a shame to have all that love turn into hate. Star Wars, at its core, has always been about compassion and the care we must take to feel and deal with our emotions in a healthy and kind way. It’s been about learning from our past to better our future, to better ourselves. To overcome the darkness- the fear, the anger and the suffering- in order to feel the light and peace. If there is anything I have learned from this experience is that I don’t want to be the person who holds onto pain and anger so tightly that the tension explodes and lashes out to hurt another as I’ve been- or worse than I’ve been hurt. I want to be the person who reaches out to heal. I hope this is me reaching out to do so, and that this helps bring clarity and understanding to a fandom that has been so separated that it’s grown hostile.
Hate feeds hate. This blog is a call to anyone who has ever received hate speech or harassment in relation to the Star Wars platform. If you receive or witness hate or harassment, please screencap and send to this blog directly. This includes anonymous messages, comments on posts, and tweets. This also includes anything sent to cast or crew members, writers and artists for Star Wars. Names of those sending hate speech will also be recorded. All things sent will be compiled on the google doc that is already being made (it’s a process of verifying and tracking down responsible parties). This document will be updated regularly and recirculated.
However, the point of this is not to attack one another. This is to give everyone the opportunity for dialogue. If someone is sending hate speech/harassment and their name is shared, anyone here is welcome to engage and discuss how to deal with it. However, hate feeds hate. I, personally, will not condone sending hateful messages to the people addressed on this blog as that only escalates the situation. Communicate in the way you would want someone to communicate with you. If what they have said angers or hurts, communicate that without the use of curses or caplock (the moment anything reads as aggressive, any meaning is lost). Or don’t communicate at all. Blocking them is just as good a purging of emotion. Just don’t let hate get in the way of what you love.
The goal of this blog is for people to be able to see who is causing the hurt in this fandom and to be able to come to terms with it in a healing way, so that the amount of comments/screencaps on this doc plateau eventually- either because people realize this kind of behavior will not be tolerated, and possibly/hopefully change their behavior, or because the people responsible have been thoroughly blocked from engaging in our community.
In the coming days, a post or series of posts (depending on how the organization pans out), will be made to address the harassment and hate speech that has been sent. However, this is a large undertaking, and I have personally only searched up until the week of TROS’s release. There have been people/blogs who have reached out and shared screencaps and information from before and after TROS’s release. This includes screencaps found on @theassholeantiarchive2-0 and other star-wars oriented blogs. This also includes screencaps found on @shitreylossay and from @dataracer’s twitter posts, which I have looked into personally and have found them to be misleading in framing. However, they do contain valid hate/harassment sent from various star wars fans, and that compilation will be addressed in a separate post (with who has been deleted from twitter, still active, and so on). But please do not send screencaps found on shitreylossay or dataracer, as I have already looked at and continue to verify them as I make this post.
