So.. going go on a super miscellanous and random rant that probably no one is gonna care about. So feel free to skip this.
But Nicki Minaj is getting a lot of heat cause of her new music video Chun-li, and is being called out on cultural inappropriation left and right, and that Nicki is contorting Chun-li's image. Andddd for some reason it's irking me that people arn't getting the message she's trying to get out, cause honestly I think it's pretty brilliant. Most of her songs tend to have a lot of hidden meaning.
Chun li was the first female character in the street Fighter video game series, that paved the way not only for other female characters inside of a male dominated series, but female characters in gaming, period. She also wasn't the typical damsel in distress, she was equal, if not better, than her male counterparts. The rap industry is a male dominated industry, and Nicki Minaj single handedly reintroduced the industry to female rappers, where the industry was losing hope in female rappers. Her choosing Chun li to represent her please in the industry, is very fitting. Also, Chun li has a backstory where she is demonized as the bad guy for assassing a police officer, responsible for killing her father. Nicki Minaj uses this inside of her music video, to reference her beef with Cardi B. You see her fighting Chinese police officers, just as Chun Li did, prior to her Killing the officer that killed her dad.
When someone says "I been on" it means that they paved the way for others, are a legend in the industry, have always been there, and will not go anywhere. Like Beyonce. Its referring to a pedestal, or a throne. Shes basically saying that she is the queen in this industry, she has been sitting on her throne in the rap industry, firmly, and she isn't going anywhere, and will never become irrelevant. As if to say that there is no one talented enough to replace her, and take her off of her pedestal/throne, or make her irrelevant. She's beating her chest in pride like king kong.
Laura Croft is also another popular female character, who paved the way for other females in a male dominated industry.
Also, there was drama between Nikki and Cardi B, with people trying to paint Nicki Minaj as a jealous bully to Cardi B, and the bad guy in the situation between the two. People were going online, painting Nicki Minaj as a jealous bully.
There are a bunch of gaming references, that really only geeks and gamers will understand. This is a diss track, and if Cardi B were familiar with gaming, and comic books, she would understand the severity of the diss thrown at her.
