Edward Gorey
"Book Collector with Six Cats (one hidden)" by Edward Gorey
Current read
The Theatrical Adventures of Edward Gorey
I love Gorey’s artwork and have added several books to my TBR just because he illustrated them
YALL I saw this on Instagram PLEASE somone more creative then me make a Last Trial edit out of it
And that’s a wrap on:
Overall a pretty interesting nonfiction book on the history of strange manuscripts and literary objects from all over the world.
If you like history, books, and are bibliophile-inclined, I think you’d really enjoy this.
If you like any of the pictures I posted here, let me know if you’ve seen any in real life!
While a physical copy of the book is pretty expensive, it looks like a lot of local libraries supply it.
I personally read the digital ebook edition off of Hoopla, but if you can check out a physical copy I encourage you to do so.
And Now for One Last Literary Oddity
A page from A Pickle for the Knowing Ones or Plain Truth in a Homespun Dress published in 1802 by Timothy Dexter
Yes that’s a page of all punctuation marks
And No, no one knows why
And for a final Giant Sized Protest….
The Pátria Amada , created by lawyer Vinicius Leôncio in 2014 in Brazil.
This billboard sized tome is 7.5 tons and filled with 41,000 pages. When laid flat it’s nearly 7 feet tall. It was published as a form of protest and contained every Brazilian tax code created over a twenty three year period. When asked why Leônico replied
“I simply thought that something should be done about the humiliation we must endure to pay taxes in this country”
But I have to ask…..how much were the material taxes?
Giant Books
The Klencke Atlas, created by Dutch merchant Johannes Klencke for King Charles II of England in 1660
This book measures 6 feet tall and when opened is over 7 feet wide
Giant Books
The Codex Gigas, created sometime in the early 13th century
This giant medieval manuscript was supposedly created in one night by a monk as punishment for breaking his vows. He was charged to write down all of humanity’s knowledge in one night or be executed. The legend tells that in desperation he prayed to the devil for help and Lucifer himself completed the manuscript.
It’s also known today as “The Devils Bible”
Giant Books
An illustration by Henry Darger from his 15,145 page novel, The Story of the Vivian Girls
This book, written by an American janitor named Henry Darger, took several decades to write.
It’s a manuscript in 13 volumes filled with over 9,000 words and 300 illustrations like this one each about 10 feet wide
And Finally…..
A miniature biography of Thomas Jefferson published in the 1800s to fit inside a nutshell
Well now we know where THAT phrase comes from
Tiny Books
A miniature of Dante’s The Divine Comedy published in 1878.
Miniature printed books like this called for the development of miniature typeface machines too
Tiny Books
A miniature Qur’an created in the 1500s in Persia.
This tiny Qur’an has 338 little pages and is only 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 inches in diameter
Tiny Books
A rolled out peasants almanac from 1513. It could be folded up tight and placed in a pocket, then unwrapped to consult about farming, weather , and measurements
Good to know the human race has always found ways to look up information anytime from a square in their pocket
Tiny Books
A miniature Book of Hours , created between 1530-1535 by artist Simon Bening
This book , designed to be in a worshippers pocket ready and waiting, was about 3 inches high and 2 inches thick
Ancient Books of Science
The Book of The Seven Chimes, by Abūal-Qāsim Al-Irāqī Al-Simāwi.
Written by a Muslim alchemist from Baghdad in the 1200s, it shows how widespread the practice and beliefs of alchemy were in ancient history
