There's more of them!!
Edit: And here's a 5 minute video from the same exhibition.
i've been obsessed with this video so i downloaded the video file off of youtube so even if the internet goes down i can always watch frogtimelapse.mp4
These pescatarian birds are directly exposed to PFAS contamination due to the island's position near the St. Lawrence Seaway.
Over fifty years of data show a peak in PFAS (also known as "forever chemicals") content in seabird eggs in the 90s, followed by a decrease as regulations went into effect. The most recent findings show a 70% decrease of most common PFAS.
While continued vigilance a regulation is needed, this data indicates that regulations are working to reduce PFAS concentrations in marine ecosystems.
Yes!!!! I did a review of literature on PFASs in human drinking water about half a year ago, and there is a lot of really good progress! Please celebrate this, please don't let this solution be forgotten (at least so quickly) as the ozone layer or acid rain.
We are making genuine progress! Producers are dramatically altering how much they use PFAS and how much gets released in effluent, but also there's a lot better understanding of how to remove PFAS from the environment!
Environmental problems CAN BE SOLVED.
“For example, if you’re trying to convince people to boycott a segregated store, your object is to convince them that boycotting the store will have a strategic effect, not that desegregation is morally important. For whatever reason, on a cognitive level human beings have a really hard time with this. Smucker cites an example of a Lefty roleplaying session where people were tasked with selling an action to people who agreed with them on principle but didn’t see the strategic merit of the action. Surprisingly, the sellers couldn’t make the conceptual switch to sell strategic merit: instead, they doubled down on THIS ISSUE IS IMPORTANT — even though it had been stressed to them that the people they were selling to bought into the importance of the issue. People react poorly to “this is important, so do WHATEVER I SAY”; they want to be convinced that what you’re proposing will work.”

Also from above:
“Bob Wing, a grassroots organizer, explains this nicely: “If winning feels impossible, then righteousness can seem like the next best thing.” But righteousness is not conducive to getting normies to join your team if your team cannot demonstrate ability to, at least sometimes, win. Nor does righteousness help you make real inroads with regular people.”
Somewhat related, my favorite comic strip of all time:
Many queer people are just fundamentally not normal, because “normal” is socially constructed. It is an arbitrary category meant to be weaponized against marginalized people. If you limit your advocacy for queer rights to those who can be crammed into that category, you won’t have a leg to stand on when that category gets smaller and you suddenly aren’t in it anymore.
"Too often these days I find myself in the position of defending someone I think is annoying from someone I know is dangerous."
I think "throwing the most cringe members of our community under the bus doesn't stop it from barrelling towards you next" is a phrase that desperately needs to become a piece of calligraphy or cross stitch that people hang on their wall in a little frame
My toxic trait is that no matter what I need three hours to myself at the end of the day to do absolutely nothing.
I'm about a quarter of the way through Hero of Ages and I want to try and call some stuff, see if I'm right. Spoilers for Mistborn trilogy under the cut.
1- Vin was made like the Inquisitors are made, by her mother with the sacrifice of her baby sister. Clues in brass stud / brass spike, and the choice of the word "messy" to describe how people die in this process. Word association.
2- One of the powers and I'm not 100% sure which can influence thoughts - the voice that talked to Zane was also the voice that talked to Vin's mother. Probably Ruin cause it also takes over the inquisitors but maybe not cause it can't take Vin; anyway it told Vin's mother how to how to "make" a mistborn
3-It also told Kelsier. Can't decide if Mare was sacrificed or her death used.
4- could be totally wrong about it not being able to take Vin or access her mind because every Mistborn except Elend is actually bonkers. Like, as someone who has suffered intrusive thoughts the "voice" of Reen is an understandable illustration of what they are like, and of the fact that that shit doesn't just magically disappear because your curcumstances change, but it could also be more literal.
Part of me likes the idea that Vin is suffering a totally normal trauma response and the questions that could be roused by the juxtaposition of mental illness vs The Call of Cthulhu but I'm not sure what they are yet
in happier pride news i actually found this deeply heartwarming
that's solidarity baybeeee
Further context: Durham city council (Reform UK) cut funding and support for Pride. The Durham Miner's Association and other trade unions raised enough money for Durham Pride 2026 to go ahead - a direct call back to when Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) raised money for mining communities when Margaret Thatcher seized union funding during the miner strikes of 1984-85.
At the 1985 Labour party meet, the motion to support LGBT rights as a party was passed due to a block vote from mining unions.
Stephen Guy, the chair of the Durham Miners’ Association, said that when it became apparent Durham Pride was under threat, he took it upon himself to “encourage the trade union movement to step up and do the right thing, and stand shoulder to shoulder with the LGBT+ community […] They not only raised funds for us, but came to our communities, uplifted our spirits when they were down, and showed their solidarity.”
Is it Horizon Forbidden Tomb Raider or Tomb Raider Zero Dawn? 🤔
Ok but real talk, these two teaming up to explore ruins? Peak
“If I have one message to give to the secular American people, it’s that the world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don’t know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same.”
― Marjane Satrapi, Iranian graphic novelist
Goodnight, and rest in peace, Marjane Satrapi. Thank you for your work and your voice. May we hear you.
please walk around with your hand on my waist or the small of my back or my ass or the back of my neck or literally anywhere
There should be more types of ovation. Spinning, prone, supplicating. We have barely scratched the surface of ovation techniques.
RIP Marjane Satrapi, author of the amazing graphic novels Persepolis about living during the fundamentalist revolution in Iran in the 70’s and 80’s. She also created the animated movie based on the graphic novels, which is where these gifs come from.

Reblogging in honor of Marjane Satrapi, one of THE great graphic novelists. Her comic Persepolis was a crucial text for shaping my belief that comics can deeply explore identity, culture, politics, and history.
dystopia au where we are all assigned one of two chosen genders at birth
Thanks to ultrasounds, the genders can be assigned before birth. The people are so excited to conform they throw “Gender reveal parties” to make sure their offspring exist in a strict binary since before they can even form thoughts.
Children are color-coded according to their binary assignment.
One of the genders is seen as inherently inferior.
This all sounds really effing creepy when you put it that way
#BECAUSE IT IS
And if you deviate from the assigned gender you can be disowned by your family, fired from your job, and beaten by authorities.
