In the kingdom of Pomefiore, Crown Princess Devina Crowley finds herself in an arranged marriage with King Vil Schoenheit. The union is purely political, and Devina is resigned to her fate of being a mere pawn in her father's game. Vil, on the other hand, has been secretly seeing his childhood friend, Duke Rook Hunt, as a lover, and Devina is there to save face and eventually produce an heir. As Devina settles into her new role as queen, Rook is assigned as her personal guard. At first, Devina is wary of Rook, but she soon finds him to be kind and charming. Devina starts to see Rook in a different light and begins to fall for him. Rook, too, finds himself drawn to Devina. He convinces Vil to spend more time with Devina as well, hoping that he will see the same things in her that Rook does. Vil begins to spend more time with Devina, and they start to form a bond. Devina is surprised by how much she enjoys Vil's company. Devina starts to feel torn between her feelings for Rook and Vil. She struggles to come to terms with their relationship and wonders if either one of them truly loves her or if she is just a means to an end. Despite her doubts, Devina finds herself falling for both men.
