“everything shane hollander was afraid of happened” so true. he also got everything he ever dreamed of and wanted. because he was afraid and everything went wrong and then he was BRAVE!!! and he got EVERYTHING he dreamed of!! he got to play hockey and get married and do everything he thought he couldn’t!!! the message CANNOT be that good things don’t matter because you had to fight for them and it was difficult and hurtful. he got everything he dreamed of because HE got it for himself!!

This is 10000% true, but I think the reason that people emphasize that everything he was afraid of happened is bc the book makes him seem dumb and selfish for being afraid of it. Shane isn’t granted the exploration, introspection, or sympathy for his experiences. It would have landed so much harder if the book had emphasized how brave he was instead of positioning him as failing Ilya by being selfish and shallow even while it dropped facts about why his experiences might have led him to be understandably afraid.

Which to be clear is a writing issue to me, not an interpretation issue from anyone.

EXACTLY. The issue isn’t that good things don’t matter if it’s hard to get to them, it’s that the bad things that happened to him are treated like they aren’t bad and are devalued and people and the story act like that’s his penance for not just doing what Ilya wanted him to. It’s not “Shane was treated homogobicaly and tormented and lost everything but life rewarded him for his hard work with everything he wanted” it’s “Shane didn’t do what Ilya wanted, which was clearly actually the RIGHT thing, so as punishment he goes through being tormented and treated homophobicaly and loosing everything he hurt and worked for but that doesn’t matter cause he’s got his boyfriend and that’s all that matters cause Ilya is more important than anything else’

Plus onto of that there’s all the added nuance of Shane being a POC and the way that’ll intersect and effect the backlash he faces versus the backlash Ilya faces in a very racist sport.

current fan creation landscape is kinda like if you went to a party with a homemade cake and everyone takes a slice and silently thumbs up at you with no attempt to start a conversation except for occasionally some guy sits in the corner with a tape recorder critiquing the cake as though he was a restaurant critic and another guy is handing the cake to an uber driver like "yeah i need you to find a restaurant that makes cake like this so i can have more of it" and the only person that's talked to you in 30 minutes is a very sweet little guy who was like "hey i liked your cake" and then ran away apologizing for bothering you the moment you said thank you.
