Setting the bag containing several presents (from not just her but the whole of the Commandos) down, Bex started to make her way through the house. In the kitchen, she located Phil and his wife but no baby. She opened her mouth to ask, but before she even got the question out, Phil pointed to the floor above. "Mom has her. First door on the left." Following Phil's directions, Bex headed up to the nursery, smiling as she saw Peggy with the little girl. "So how does it feel to be a grandma?"

Peggy and Dugan had flown in from London the week before, anticipating the birth of their first grandchild. Everything had gone well for Elizabeth and she had brought a beautiful little girl into the world. A few days later, mother and daughter were home and Peggy was there to offer them all the help they would need. Phil was grateful for this mum, knowing that she would be there when he was called back into work.

When Bex came upstairs, she would hear soft singing coming from the nursery. “Que será, será. Whatever will be, will be. The future's not ours to see. Que será, será. What will be, will be.”

Hearing Bex’s voice in the doorway, Peggy turned and smiled broadly. “Over the moon. Look at her, Bex. She’s perfect. My little Alexandra.”

“Hmmm…” This was not a questioned answered lightly. Clearly, Talia had a list. But not all of the items on that list could be told to Aunt Peggy. No. Some were better kept secret or just between her and Isaac. “Well…first things first, Halloween would become a national holiday or bank holiday as you and Uncle Jack call them. Then I’d arrange for free education for all dinos (try and ban Viktor then, Steve) and make red bull slushies the official breakfast food of my country.”

Yes. There were certain things you didn’t want to share with Aunt Peggy. Especially since she had lunch with your mother at least once a week. “I completely agree that there needs to be a day off for Halloween. It would help a lot of people. As for the dinos, I think I would agree with Steve that they don’t belong in an educational setting.”

Bex loved Pegs, she did. And she owed her nearly everything she knew; when she had first entered the war after following Steve to Europe in the USO, she was a smart ass kid – armed with a decent bit of shooting, a killer left hook, and a good smile. It was Peggy who took her under her wing and turned her into not just a good soldier, but a good spy. It was Peggy who taught her to kick ass in victory rolls and heels.

She was special. Not just to Bex but all the Commandos. It was why they had agreed to join with SHIELD in the first place. But sometimes, like now, when Peggy had to be more their boss and less their friend it made Bex feel a bit like a kid called into the Principal’s office.

Or about to be sent into time out.

“Good for them? Look, you know how we operate. We’ve been operating this way since 1943. We’re not changing. And we’re not justifying our methods. The higher ups wanted results and we got them. Now…if they’d like to meet and personally tell us thank you…”

Sometimes it was difficult to balance being friends with Bex (and the Commandos) and being their boss. They had known each other for so long that they were like family. It was especially true since Peggy had married one Timothy “Dum Dum” Dugan. But she was their boss and therefore responsible for them. 

“As much as it pains me, it’s not 1943 anymore. It’s not even the Cold War anymore. Times have changed and we’re expected to have changed with them. We can’t operate the way that we used to. Those higher ups could decide to shut us down at any moment. And none of us want that.”

Peggy pushed her chair back and stood, straightening the lines of her skirt. “I’m sorry, Bex. I don’t like doing this, but I have my orders.”

Peggy’s heart stopped for a moment when she heard her granddaughter’s words. She sank into the chair in front of her, pulling up a few programs on her computer. Alex’s location and the location of any other assets she had in the area. In seconds, she had set out an alert.

“Stay where you are, sweetheart. I have someone on their way. It’s going to be alright.”

“That was a difficult winter. A blizzard had trapped half our battalion behind the German line. Steve...Captain Rogers, he fought his way through a HYDRA blockade that had pinned our allies down for months.
