In spite of the chilling breeze as the sun’s warmth began to fade, she remained unbothered as she sat in the imperial garden. While she should appreciate finally having time alone to properly grieve, her mind was distracted, plagued by the what ifs and happenstances yet to occur, dread for the future and the unknown. Her husband was still out there, but did he know she was still alive as well?
There she was, a lonesome maiden in a foreign kingdom, where she would not see her old friends for some time, if ever at all. Zhenji wondered how her mother-in-law was doing. She had not seen her husband in some time, either, and no matter how much she wished for him to bring his armies to save her, she knew it would be foolish.
Besides, with how the battles seemed to be going, Zhenji began to feel doubt that she would ever see her love again. It was devastating to think of, and she felt guilty for thinking Yuan Xi would lose, but she had seen the Cao army’s power. It was undeniably greater, more unified than the Yuans.
Zhenji sighed quietly to herself, watching the occasional petal give in to the cold and flutter to the dirt. While the thought of trying something against them crossed her mind, she knew better. Perhaps it was more wise to accept whatever fate she was gifted. For now she tried to clear her mind for just a little while, accompanied by the familiar floral scents not unlike her home...
