World Chimpanzee Day is observed annually on July 14 to commemorate the day in 1960 when Dr. Jane Goodall arrived at Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania to begin her groundbreaking research on wild chimpanzees. It also serves as a call to action to protect these endangered primates from threats such as habitat loss, poaching, disease, and the illegal pet and bushmeat trades.
Carl Edward Sagan (November 9, 1934 – December 20, 1996) was an American astronomer, planetary scientist, and science communicator. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction for The Dragons of Eden. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential science communicators of his generation.
The Puerto Rican parrot, known by its Taino name iguaca, is found nowhere else in the world, and it came heartbreakingly close to vanishing forever. By the 1970s, after centuries of deforestation and hardship, only a small handful were left alive in the wild. What happened next is one of the island's quiet miracles. Decades of patient conservation work in El Yunque and the Rio Abajo forest have slowly, carefully brought the iguaca back from the very edge, one nesting season at a time. The flashes of green and red over the canopy are a sound and a sight our grandparents nearly lost. This little parrot is a living symbol of Puerto Rico itself, fragile, beautiful, and far more resilient than anyone expected.
World Rainforest Day is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about the critical importance of rainforests for climate regulation, biodiversity, and the livelihoods of millions of people Convened by the non-profit Rainforest Partnership since 2017, the day unites conservation organizations, activists, businesses, and the public to advocate for forest protection and sustainable practices Rainforests cover only about 6% of the Earth’s land surface but are home to roughly half of all terrestrial plant and animal species, making them biodiversity hotspots.

Hawksbill sea turtles inhabit the tropical and sub-tropical waters of all of the world’s major oceans. Hawksbills get their name from their unique beak-like mouth, which resembles that of a hawk and is perfect for finding food sources in hard-to-reach cracks and crevices. They are the only species of sea turtle that can survive on a diet consisting mainly of sponges. Hawksbill turtles play a key role in the function of marine ecosystems.

In 2026, World Migratory Bird Day will be celebrated on May 9 in the spring and on October 10 in the fall. The conservation theme this year is Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter. It highlights the role of public participation in collecting data on migratory bird populations, their habitats, and the factors that impact them, contributing to our knowledge of how to protect them.
Basalt Columns at the Black Sand Beach, South Coast of Iceland. The basalt columns here are formed from columnar jointing in cooled lava flows that once reached the sea. As the lava cooled, it cracked into hexagonal or polygonal prisms, creating the towering walls and caves that define the beach’s landscape. The black sand comes from volcanic rock fragments that were eroded by Atlantic waves.
World Tapir Day didn’t start with a big‑budget media campaign. In 2008 a loose network of zookeepers, biologists, and online wildlife forums noticed that tapirs rarely featured in global conversations about conservation. Determined to change that, they chose April 27—the birthday of conservationist Sir Adrian Lister, whose fossil research clarified tapir evolution—and launched a grassroots digital event.
