i wish all fandom wikis a very migrate to miraheze or go fully independent

ok I'm just now getting word that if you run a popular wiki and Fandom catches wind of you trying to migrate the wiki to a different platform, they will ban you and take control of your wiki to keep visitors unaware of the migration. sorry wiki editors, I didn't realize the situation was so dire

if anyone is trying to migrate away from fandom: ask the blaseball community! blaseball wiki successfully migrated off it a while ago (the old fandom wiki doesn't even show up on the first page of google results anymore), and i know there's at least one person who's been helping other wikis do the same

oh it's better than just "doesn't show up on the first page of google", it's completely gone.

as far as i'm aware, the process was:

scrape all the content off the old wiki and set up a new one, migrate as much of the community as you can over there. do not link it on the fandom wiki

add a new burner account as admin, have it do a bit of menial update work, then wait a few days/weeks

make a post saying the wiki is shutting down, make up a bad excuse why ("we wanted it to limit to only canon content" - the majority of the wiki was fan lore), and again do not mention there's a new wiki

change the font to comic sans just for good measure

make a script to slowly wipe and delete every page on the fandom wiki (using said burner account), ideally at night, and starting with less important popular pages (talk pages, media, etc)

hope the fandom admins don't catch you in the process

wait for them to find out the damage was too large (and most importantly, spread out) for their automated tools to roll it back

fandom gives up and deletes it entirely

this happened in early 2021, so this probably wouldn't work if anyone tried it now, but maybe someone can come up with an even more clever method

English has different words for mouse and rat but in Chinese they're both the same creature (laoshu) so I asked my mom well how do you differentiate between mice and rats. She, clearly having never felt the need to do so, was like uhh big laoshu and little laoshu I guess. Then I went online to see how the difference between (the English words) "mouse" and "rat" was being explained to CN->EN learners and there are numerous articles delving deep into the analysis. Bigger vs smaller, indoors vs outdoors, cute and favorable connotations vs evil and ugly, tail length, fear factor, emphasis on the fact that you cannot call it a "computer rat." Much thought is being expended on this little mystery of the English language
