A Notice About Gender Usage on the Hollow Knight Wiki
We've noticed several posts going around pointing out our recent change in how we cite and prioritize sources for the Gender category of NPCs and Bosses on the wiki. While concerns are valid, some of them are spreading accusations that misconstrue the issue at hand, so hopefully this post can clarify a few major points:
First and foremost: The Hollow Knight Wiki respects the real-life right for expression of gender identity and gender presentation. None of the actions we've taken were in an attempt to invalidate trans/nonbinary/genderless identities. The wiki editing community and admin team is made up of volunteers of many different genders and orientations, and they are an ongoing part of this discussion.
Second: The wiki is always looking for the most accurate source of information in regards to game information, and we wanted to take specific care to get genders that are as "canon" as possible. This means a few things:
Information confirmed by developers
Information explicitly stated by the game
Information pulled from sources such as game files and translations.
We do not treat translations as the primary source for all things related to gender. We are aware that some languages are use inherently gendered language and pronouns, even when referring to genderless things. What is a fact though is that Team Cherry has been confirmed to give a list of official genders and pronouns to each translation team. Some info about that:
The list is NOT simply "if you have to make them gendered, here's what to use." Team Cherry HAS given optional genders if it helps language flow better for specific translations, BUT that is separate from the official genders, of which several nonbinary/genderless NPCs have been confirmed, including Twelfth Architect and Moss Druid.
The translators were then given free reign to adapt as they see fit. This did end up with some languages transliterating Team Cherry's use of they/them pronouns and titles (typically making them masculine in the process).
In order to avoid our sources breaking NDA, we have opted to not source the gender lists directly, but rather the translations that properly match the official genders. Unless Team Cherry publishes the list themselves, this was deemed our best option to have a citable source.
Team Cherry has confirmed that genders could be revealed through translations. This is the primary reason we have traditionally used translations as reliable sources (there are a few translations such as Russian that have been shown to have shoddy/inconsistent language, so we are always trying to stay on top of this).
In regards to the game's use of "they" pronouns: the Hunter's Journal and Hornet's dialogue in particular has been proven to be insufficient in confirming ANY gender when referring to them as "they." Several of these selfsame characters have been referred to as male/female elsewhere in the game. It's possible that Hornet may simply refer to some characters as "they" as a general term, OR that Team Cherry wrote many characters as gender neutral early on before genders were established, and simply didn't consider needing to change the pronouns afterward. Again, unless Team Cherry themselves speak up on this, we don't know. Regardless, it is inconsistent, and therefore not a reliable method of determining gender on a fact-based wiki.
As a wiki, we also have to choose a single set of pronouns to use to refer to characters throughout the entire wiki. This is not done to invalidate people who may have multiple sets of pronouns, but in order to avoid confusion in contexts and syntax, especially where characters interact with each other. This was done most notably in the past to use "they/them" for the Knight, and subsequently with The Hollow Knight and the other Siblings for parity.
Finally, we are constantly improving and doing our best to improve. The original decision to make this change was several weeks in the making, deliberating with many editors, so any additional changes cannot simply happen overnight. We have already heard lots of feedback from users on Discord and in a few comments on the wiki pages, and always appreciate that feedback. It is always a difficult process to both seek out accurate, verified sources AND not invalidate fan interpretations or real-life gender expression. Again, we never plan to erase representation or identities with these actions, and will continue to do our best to improve on this system in the future.
(Hopefully we can get another AMA/Q&A in the future to clarify things).
Final note: When we lock posts/templates/pages, that is typically due to either excessive edit warring between new editors, or to prevent comments from turning into a flame war.
We know this response won't fully satisfy everyone, but we hope it can at least shed some light on the process behind the scenes.
Thank you for reading, and thank you for continuing to support us as we strive to make the Hollow Knight Wiki the best it can be!
