Free Your Skill | The Beginning Of Eliminating Failure
So here I am writing my very first blog post.. Why do I start this thing here?
Well in the last several years I learned lotâs of different things. Some useful things and some that werenât useful at all.
What I canât give you is perfect university level English,but what I can give you is a background experience of several years of struggling..and the lessons I learned so you donât have to go through some of them.
I want to design and this blog is designed as both an introduction to some of my main ideas and kind of a reminder and refresher or a warm up course to my training if you wish. I will give these ideas just one after another and spend a couple of minutes on each one so you can just drive these ideas deep into your mind and think about what those mean in your life..so letâs go!
To begin this I want to start with some of the ideas that I consider to be âThe Big Pictureâ the theory and these will affect your paradigm in building your skill..in whatever you do..and the first thing I want to talk about is..
Eliminate the concept of âFailureâ..
Iâve spent a lot of years of my life..working on my âown headâ and working to get this whole notion of failure out of my system..
A big epiphany for me was that âFailureâ is an invented concept. Humans invented the concept of failure and what that means we essentially made it ALL up..
The concept of failing includes that if you fail after a certain period of time a certain amount of time..that âmeansâ you probably failed..
Yet.. if a toddler tries to stand up after a couple of hundred times and âfailsâ to do so.. we never say.. âPoor baby I guess heâs never going to BECOME a walkerâ.
The problem really only comes when we start attaching meaning to failure.
âIdentity Meaningâ
Humans have a tendency to make what psychologists call âIdentity Meaningâ out of external events..
Identity meaning. You do have a self image that you carry around in yourself about who you are as a person and what you are capable of.
You attach this meaning to yourself mostly out of storyâs that happened to you..what you experienced tells you the âstoryâ about who you are..
Because as children we donât have any frame of reference this is the only way to getting to know ourselves..through experiencing outside events.
We do this as children all the time and it usually becomes a habit even into adulthood if we donât become aware about it and separate consciously external events happening to us from who we are as a person. You might see this quite often.. people generalize the meaning of things and say things like:
âIâm so unluckyâ (Because some unfortunate thing happened to them a couple of times) or they say things like âIâm so clumsyâ (Because they happened to drop a couple of things)..
If something happens outside an external thing happens like maybe someone disapproves of us and doesnât like what we are doing.. Instead of just saying âThey disapproved of us whatever thatâs there issueâ we internalize it and we make it ABOUT US.. and go actually even further and make it about who we are as a person. We attach that to our self image and identify that to ourselves.
We make âIdentity Meaning about itâ ..Instead of just saying âWell Iâve got disapproved and itâs fine. Thatâs there issue and not my responsibility.â
This can take a vicious cycle where if someone getâs disapproved they might start generalizing..» âPeople probably donât approve of meâ »
âI probably donât DESERVE approval..Iâm the kind of person people donât approve ofâ. We generalize and that becomes our identityâŠ
âIâm a failureâ..and whenever you get to the point in your mind that you describe yourself as a failure..as a person..thatâs gonna take a ton of work to undo that.
So whatâs the lesson here? Itâs simple..
Stop making âIdentity Meaningâ out of external events..because it has nothing to do with who you are as a person. It has only to do with what meaning you attach to outside events.
