[DAY 7 SATURDAY] EXECUTION AND CONCLUSION

We arrived at Barangay Maliksi 1 past 7 in the morning. When we arrived, she and Em was the only one there so we arrived earlier than the others. Eddie said that they attended Jen’s birthday so they already expected that they will be late. The kids were having breakfast when we arrived so we just sat there and wait for them to finish. Since we have little sleep, the 5 of us fell asleep. I woke up feeling sweat on my body so I adjusted my position. I saw that the other members are already there and that they are also lying, resting.

Again, I fell asleep and I dreamt. In my dream, the people are having bible study and when I woke up, the people outside the house are really having their bible study. I checked the time and it was already quarter to 11. Eddie entered the house and I asked her where she came from. She said that they were outside, fixing the bed that we broke yesterday. I said sorry to Eddie because we fell asleep and she said that it’s okay and she understands because we finished wrapping the giveaways by dawn.

Since it’s already lunch time, we went out to eat lunch. Wayne, Ariane, Grace and Angge were left at the house to look for the kids then after we eat, we will change shifts. We headed to the carinderia where we often eat but unfortunately, it was closed so we walked ahead to look for another carinderia. We found one but we can’t see a place where we can eat so we decided to just buy meals in alfamart.

Unfortunately, for the second time, the meals were not available so we decided to just buy canned foods and eat at the carinderia we saw because Bea saw that there is a space inside where we can eat.

Indeed, there was a space inside so we ate there for our lunch. After that, we immediatey went back to Mama Jemma’s house so the other half can eat their lunch. When it’s almost 1 in the afternoon, we packed our things and prepared to go to the lot where we will hold our program. When the other half of the group arrived, we went to the lot all together.

We set-upped the place placing chairs and tables and readied the songs needed for the talent show. By 2:30 in the afternoon, the program started. Bea started the program with a mini seminar like bible study. The kids get to write their complains in a paper then Bea told them to rip the paper wherein the shape of it will become a cross and so on and so forth.

After the seminar, Uela arrived so she took over on being the mc for the talent show. The kids danced, sang and acted. Everyone enjoyed the program. They even sang the song Hayaan Mo Sila which is 6 minutes long and we’re shocked that all of them memorize the lyrics of the song.

After the talent show, we distributed the giveaways then took some photos. After that, we talked to the 5 kids of Mama Jemma to give them some words of wisdom before we left. We also gave them some gifts like school supplies, food and make-ups then after that we escorted them home and left them.

We cleaned the place we used then wait for 5 o’clock before we left Barangay Maliksi 1. Although it was tiring, the immersion was all worth it!

[2ND AND LAST OVERNIGHT] WRAPPING UP

After having dinner at Mama Jemma’s house, we immediately headed to Sarah’s place. We arrived at her house by 8 in the evening since there’s still a line on the terminal. Before heading to Sarah’s place, we bought a kilo of fries and 2 packs of juice for our snack. When we arrived at Sarah’s house, we rested for some minutes while Pau and Sarah cooked the fries. After resting, we started cleaning ourselves one by one.

By 10 in the evening, we finished cleaning and cooking so we started wrapping the giveaways. Wrapping the gifts was quite hard because we have to use the 10 gift wrappers to wrap 70 pieces school supplies.

It’s already midnight and we’re still not done wrapping. We’re also sleepy and hungry so Sarah bought noodles for our midnight snack. Not long enough, the noodles were done so we continued wrapping while eating. We finished wrapping all the gifts past 1 in the morning. We cleaned the bed then we sleep.

I woke up about 4:30 in the morning. I woke up the other members. I cooked scrambled egg for our breakfast then Sarah cooked pancit canton. While she was cooking, Eveth and I went out to buy shampoo. When we returned, our breakfast is ready. We ate pancit canton, scrambled egg and bread then after that, we took a bath and prepared for the long day.

[DAY 6 FRIDAY] MENU PLANNING AND UNEXPECTED SITUATION

For our 6th day in Barangay Maliksi 1, we arrived with our hands full of our things for our overnight. Upon arriving to Mama Jemma’s house, we saw Arlene, Jack and Mama Jemma. It’s Friday that day so we know that Arlene have classes so we asked her why is she home. She told us that her ears are aching and that it bled last night so she didn’t went to school.

After that, we planned our menu for tonight’s dinner, tomorrow morning’s breakfast and lunch for the afternoon. We have decided that we will have Adobong Kangkong together with the Maling that Em has brought. Mama Jemma told us that her kids were picky eaters and that they don’t like eating vegetables so we purposely agreed to cook Adobong Kangkong for dinner and aside from that, it was also cheap plus its sauce can already be the partner of the rice. For breakfast, we have decided to go for sinangag with soysauce and scrambled egg and as for lunch, we asked Wayne to cook tuna sisig and bring it tomorrow since he was absent that day.

After finishing our menu, we decided to buy the ingredients we needed so that we can cook early since the last overnight, we had a late dinner. Eveth, Em, Eddie and me went out together with Arlene and Jack to buy Kangkong, Soysauce, Onion and Garlic. The talipapa nearby was close so we left Jack and Arlene at the barangay and told them to not wait for us if we took some time.

After walking for several minutes, we still haven’t found a talipapa so we decided to just buy the ingredients for tuna sisig at the nearby alfamart. On our way to the convenient store, we happen to pass by a talipapa so we returned to our Plan A which is to buy ingredients for Adobong Kangkong. After buying the four things we needed, we returned home but we first bought a dozen of egg for our breakfast and a kilo of rice.

When we arrived home, we decided to buy snacks at the nearby sari-sari store. We bought 3 packs of bread which has 3 pieces per pack and a liter of juice. The bread was not enough so we bought another pack and an ice for the juice. Aihla and Sarah arrived after some minutes from fetching water so we bought again another 2 packs of bread and juice. We ate the snacks while Bea cooked the Adobong Kangkong since she’s the only one who knows how to cook that.

While Bea was cooking, she noticed that we are missing some ingredients and since I am the one who’s keeping the money, I bought the needed ingredients which are vinegar and sugar. We requested to Bea that she put lots of sauce to the Adobo so the sauce itself can be the viand.

It was already past 4 in the afternoon when Bea finished cooking. Pau, Eveth and I were left in the house to clean and to cook the maling and rice while the rest will go to the court and the barangay. We cleaned the house first then rested for a while. After some minutes, Eddie, Em, Sarah and Aihla returned with a bad news. They told us that we can’t sleep in the barangay because there are police there and they will stay for the night.

We didn’t expect this to happen so we immediately planned if we will return home or push our overnight. We have decided that we will spend our overnight in Sarah’s place to wrap our giveaways. We contacted Ma’am Eullo to tell her the problem and she allowed us. But before that, while we wait for Ma’am Eullo’s reply, I cooked rice while Pau fry the luncheon meat.

Dinner time and our food is all ready. Bea’s Adobong Kangkong was unexpectedly a blockbuster but to us not to the kids. After dinner, Mama Jemma told us to not wash the dishes because there is no light outside and that she will take care of it tomorrow. Before leaving, we gave to her our gift for her which is groceries. She thanked us and we can see contentment in her eyes. After that, we left and headed to Sarah’s house.

[DAY 5 SATURDAY] U MUD BRO?

We arrived at Mama Jemma’s house by 6:45 in the morning. She is already cooking breakfast when we arrived and 3 out of her 5 kids were already awake. We boiled water for coffee and milo since it’s quite cold.

For our breakfast, we had scrambled egg and noodles. Our ulam for that morning is plenty so we don’t really have to eat minimal but we still do to set example to Mama Jemma’s kids since she told us that they are picky eaters. After cleaning and washing the dishes, we rested for a while then we helped Arlene, Mama Jemma’s daughter make her project which is a stick puppet.

Past 10 in the afternoon when people entered Mama Jemma’s house. She told us that they have Bible study. We decided to go to the covered court with the kids so they can Bible study peacefully. One of our groupmates, Aihla, joined them so she can interact with them.

We played with the kids on the covered court. We also petted a kitty because she was scared since a kid was playing her. We spent playing on the court until 11 o’clock. We then returned to Mama Jemma’s house. Wayne tried walking to the back of Mama Jemma’s house which is a body of water that’s dry because it’s still low tide. Sarah, Bea, Aihla and me followed him. It was really muddy and every step we take, the ground we walk to is really soft. We returned to the stoned ground with our shoes and feet with mud.

We left Mama Jemma’s house past 12 o’clock in the afternoon and Uela and Angge were left because they will duty whole day since they didn’t sleep for the night there.

[1ST NIGHT] FAR FROM HOME, NEAR FROM REALITY

By 5:30 in the afternoon, after resting, we started preparing for our dinner. Sarah brought rice and I brought 2 cans of meatloaf and a can of corned beef. While the other members cook food, the others bought water and food for our breakfast. We had our dinner past six in the evening. We distributed our viand equally giving one slice of meatloaf to each member of our group and Mama Jemma’s family. Aside from the meatloaf, Mama Jemma cooked adobong paa ng manok and atsara. Honestly, I don’t eat chicken feet but since we only have one slice of meatloaf each and I know for sure that I will be hungry by night if I won’t eat much, I tried the chicken feet. It was not really bad. Truthfully, the taste is okay and Sarah and I liked it even though it’s our first time eating eat – Sarah and I shared plate so my ulam is her ulam, too.

After cleaning the place, we decided that half of our group will go to the Barangay Hall to arrange the place we will be sleeping. Upon reaching the hall, we’re shocked that they told us that we will be sleeping on Kapitan’s office. Is looks like a small apartment because it has a kitchen and bathroom. We arranged the place and chose our spots where we will sleep then started cleaning ourselves while we wait for the other members. The other half of our group arrived quarter to 8 in the evening.

We finished cleaning ourselves by 10 so we’re already lights off even though we’re still awake. We decided to turn off the lights because we heard some group of teenagers walking outside like there will have a fight or something. Since we are not yet sleepy, we contented ourselves talking with lights off. Eddie turned on her phone’s flashlight so we can have a source of light. She started shadow playing and I don’t know if we’re just too tired or our humor's just the same and we have shallow happiness that we burst in to laughter with Eddie’s shadow play.

We stayed up awake until midnight and I decided to sleep by that time while the others slept by 3 o’clock. I woke up at past 4 am and was a little nervous since Eveth is not on her spot. I have calmed down when Eddie told me that Eveth is on her spot.

By 5 in the morning, we decided to wash ourselves and clean the place. We left the barangay hall quarter to 6 then we went to Mama Jemma’s house to eat breakfast.

[DAY 4 FRIDAY] GOOD OL’ DAYS

On the afternoon of February 9, we arrived at Barangay Maliksi 1 with our hands full of things for our overnight. Upon reaching the place, Uela, who came to the place earlier than us, told us that the secretary is low-key telling her that we are not allowed to sleep in the barangay hall. Since we are fully-equipped with the things we needed for the overnight, we don’t want to back out. The barangay hall is empty when we arrived because there is a meeting held by the barangay official which I think is leaded by the Secretary so we decided to go to the Barangay Captain’s house to tell to him our concern.

Upon reaching Kapitan’s house, a woman, which I assume his wife entertained us. She told us that Kap is not in the house and maybe we could check if he’s in the covered court and so we left. When we were almost on the covered court, our other member called us to tell us that Kap is already there so we returned to his house. We were welcomed by him and they served us biscuits and softdrinks while we tell him our concern about the place we will be sleeping for our overnight.

After talking to his Secretary for some minutes, Kapitan told us that it’s already okay and we will be sleeping on the Barangay Hall. After that, we thanked him then left to go to Mama Jemma’s house. After placing our baggage to Mama Jemma’s house, we went to the covered court with the kids to play with them. We played piko, tumbang preso and tamaang tao. When the clock ticked 5, we returned home to prepare for our dinner.

[DAY 3 SUNDAY] SAMPU-GUITA

On Sunday, we arrived at the Church at 7:10 in the morning without Em. After the morning mass, we tried selling Sampaguita which costs ten pesos to the people leaving the Church but it was pretty hard since we are new and we still don’t have “suki”. After that, Mama Jemma told us that we will be walking to hand-out Sampaguita. I thought that we will just give portions of Sampaguita to other vendors but turns out that we walked from Maliksi 3 to Maliksi 1 giving out Sampaguita to Mama Jemma’s customer wherein we worded as Cash-On-Delivery and Door-to-Door.

The 900+ Sampaguita that Mama Jemma was holding fortunately got sold out by 10 in the morning. The walk we experienced is no joke especially in Maliksi 3 wherein we entered many alleyways. Mama Jemma earned a huge respect from me because she mastered the whole place and remembered all the places where she have customers to hand out Sampaguita.

When we were already in Maliksi 1, Sarah and I decided to buy canned goods from Alfamart so that we can eat once we are finished selling. We bought a can of luncheon meat and corned beef which cost 100 pesos. Once we’re done buying, we headed first to the house to cook for brunch. On our way, we met Em and Mama Jemma’s kid halfway. They were waiting for us and told us that they were hungry so we immediately cooked. When I’m about to cook rice, we found out that the LPG tank is empty so we decided to cook in coal with the help of a neighbour. But after two tries and two times almost starting a fire that can burn the house down, we decided to use the stove inside the house where the Champorado, for feeding, is placed.

Fortunately, we have finished cooking before 12. After praying, Eddie told me to divide the luncheon meat since there are 13 of us that will eat. I handed out one piece of luncheon meat on each plate and one spoon of corned beef. The rice we had is enough but the viand is not enough but we still made ourselves contented with it.

After eating, since we used paper plates, we don’t have anything to wash so after cleaning up we decided to leave since it was already past 12. The kids walked us up to the community’s alleyway since they will also attend to church beside the barangay hall. After bidding our goodbyes and telling them that we will be visiting again next week, we headed off home.

[DAY 2 SATURDAY] SWOT DAY

Last February 2, 2018, I asked our leader, Eddie, to change my shift to morning since it’s my brother’s birthday and we would be celebrating in the afternoon. When she released the schedule and the task we have to do for the next day, I found out that she agreed in placing me for morning schedule and we will be identifying SWOT of the community.

The next day, we arrived at the community at 7:03 in the morning without Bea with us. We decided to wait for her in the community’s covered court before proceeding to Mama Jemma’s house. While we were waiting for her, we met Beo. He’s a cat which we assumed as someone’s pet because he is clean and very clingy. Cats that aren’t feisty are house pets based from my experience as a cat owner. Beo, which we named after Bea since she’s not around that time, entertained us for quite some time until Bea arrives by quarter to 8. As soon as she arrives, we proceeded to Mama Jemma’s house.

When we arrived at our adopted family’s house, we discovered that they just woke up and is cooking rice for breakfast. When we asked the kids what their viand would be, they answered that they still don’t know so we decided to buy 2 orders of Afritada for them. We also helped Mama Jemma to fetch water and we found out that one container of tap water in their place is 3 pesos. While they were eating, we, Set A, had a mini meeting outside their house. We started sharing thoughts for our SWOT and giving opinions for our new project plan.

After that, we proceeded again to the community’s covered court because Mama Jemma and her kids attended a bible study session. Eddie, Sarah, Eveth and Bea played volleyball with the kids while Em took some pictures and played with Jerome, Mama Jemma’s kid and me staying with our belongings and taking some pictures, too.

We left the community by 12 in the afternoon and that’s how our second day in the community finished.

[DAY 1 FRIDAY] WHO RUN THE SPOT: MEETING CAPT.

Last January 19, 2018, we started our first day of immersion in Barangay Maliksi 1, Bacoor City, Cavite. We arrived at the place at exactly 1:01 pm. As soon as we arrived, we immediately divided ourselves into two groups for us to be able to work fast. Eddie told us to interview mostly the children living in the place but since it was afternoon, the kids were at school so we decided to interview the adults. Unfortunately, the people in the area sleep in the afternoon so we were not able to interview much people.

Luckily, we were able to meet the barangay captain. Me and some of my group mates started concluding things on our mind about the barangay captain’s existence in the area since we were not able to meet him every time we visit the place since we were grade 11. Thankfully, he showed up that day and we were able to interview him about some things. He told us that he was already living in the barangay since he was a kid and it is already his last term of being the barangay captain. When asked about the environment of the place, he told us that he gives out orders to clean the area at least once or twice a month together with the people from 4P who were helping his staffs but because of the river that is connected to other barangays that flows in the barangay, the trash from other place were driven in to their place making their clean up a nonsense.

When asked if they were giving seminars to the citizens since the place is a tsunami prone area, he said that the City Government conduct a seminar to everyone which the people of Maliksi Uno attend to. In terms of the safety of the place, he said to us that there is an outpost outside the vicinity and his staffs rove the place during night. I also found some CCTV cameras installed in different areas.

After our talk with Kapitan, we continued interviewing the people living in the area we are assigned to for our community profiling. By 5 o’clock in the afternoon, we left the place which concludes our first day of immersion in Barangay Maliksi 1.

The community we visited is unified because of the circumstances and the place they share with one another.

b. Ecological

The community we visited is considered as a community because they are sharing and interacting in the same environment.

c. Sectoral

The community we visited is a community because there are sectors that have distinct roles and function in the community.

d. Civil Society

The community we visited is a community because it has nongovernmental organizations like the Faith Center Imus that functions well to help and support the community. The people from FCI propagates Christianity to the area which gives a guide to the people about living life and giving them hope through the words of Christ.

Structure: Aesthetic Values

Just like in any other community, although not as rich as them, the community we visited runs just like a normal community. The children in the area know and play with one another and the citizens interact with their neighbors sharing stories and helping one another. People living in the area although having low-budget still celebrates Christmas, they are even decorating their houses. They also do lottery and they open businesses that will be beneficial for everyone like sari-sari stores, ukay-ukay and computer shops.

A community is a group of people in the society that is living and interacting with one another. They are unified because of different factors. People living in a community work together in bringing progress for the benefit of each and every citizen of that community. People in a community lives with the political motto, “unity in diversity”.

STRUCTURE OF COMMUNITY: COMMUNITY 101

Growing up in a subdivision since I was born made my life easier. Almost everything can be found in the area. Carinderia, Talipapa, Water Station, Computer Shop and most especially Sari-Sari store, name it and maybe, our subdivision has it. These businesses made our life in the subdivision more convenient and made us a little bit lazy.

In terms of interaction with the neighbors, since houses in our subdivision were townhouses, kids leaving next-door are my playmates and friends. And families give food or things to the people near them when there are occasions like birthdays or holidays since it has become a norm in the area.

IDEAL COMMUNITY: ELYSIUM

What’s paradise for you? Is it some kind of heaven? A wonderful place? A place where only happiness exists?

Can we feel paradise while we’re still on Earth? Yes? No? Maybe?

As for me,my ideal community is not literally a paradise-like place. My ideal community is a place wherein I can live in peace and without fear. A place where I can live in harmony with the people around me. It is an almost-perfect place where the citizens are law-abiding and united. But this place is non-existent and will forever be an ideal not unless the people will have unity in diversity.
