My “biggest” birthday presents from S this year were projects he knew I would never actually do. Built me a pump for the rain barrel and put together the potting bench I bought two weeks ago and has been sitting in a box since. He was hot and miserable the entire time. As much as I'd like to put this entire dumb event in the rearview mirror, I think there are important things to consider in why everyone became so entranced with this concept that these people were slowly suffocating for several days when the immediate implosion reality was pretty obvious early on. Even the final day when their deaths were confirmed I saw a tweet getting passed around about how people must feel so bad about the young person who died slowly suffocating and I was like... how can people still not understand that they INVENTED this outlandish scenario when nothing suggested it could be true?

I think our brains love the macabre. We dread it but also fully lean into the horror of suffocating slowly to death in the pure dark of the seabed, or outer space, the other corollary here.

And as much as I hate to say it, Stockton wasn’t half wrong. If we view outer space and the deep sea as corollaries, he had a point. There is an act of Congress that prohibits any safety restrictions being placed on commercial space vessels (IE. STFU FAA) in the interest of progress. When you look at the way we got to the Moon in the 60s, it makes sense. When you look at early commercial aircraft, it makes sense. The first stewardesses were required to be nurses. The reason that they got you so boozed up on flights in the 50s and 60s was that turbulence could get so bad it could snap your neck. I’m not joking. I did research on this recently in the context of space safety. When you board a commercial spacecraft, you do so with the understanding that you may blip out of existence.

I can't get over how Terminally Online that tweet is which basically says anyone who has plans for the 4th of July is a Republican. For most Americans, it's a day off from work when they can sleep in, drink alcohol, go shopping, hang out with friends and family, watch fireworks, and/or go to the beach. That's it. Most people don't even actively celebrate America on that day lol. I’ve thought for a good handful of years now that we’re really fucking ourselves over by not allowing people on the left to be proud of the country they live in and metaphorically rolling our eyes at any suggestion of patriotism on any American holiday. As someone who works for The Man, every national holiday is complex. It represents what we used to think of as victories but now are mostly things to improve upon. Do I know the VA sucks? Yes. Did I still spend a bunch of the past two weeks trying to write recommendations and key outcomes for an assessment of their workforce plan? Also yes. And fuck you if you think spending that time to improve the experience and quality of life of veterans and those who support them is useless.

July 4th is camp patriotism. Most veterans do not enjoy it. It is largely for the benefit of civilians. Which is rarely discussed. And that’s disgusting.
