Please go watch Sex Explained on Netflix. Not only is it a great resource for the basic sex education that is sorely lacking in the U.S., but some of ya’ll need to take a deep breath and remember the difference between fantasy vs reality. This purity culture thing that we’re going through right now is directly harmful to responsible, healthy sexual expression. BTW this woman, Lisa Diamond, is a noted psychologist and has been pushing for greater understanding of womens sexuality as a whole.
Good afternoon to Daniel Craig and Mads Mikkelsen only.
“There were a few times when Daniel Craig and I went a little far at the table discussing what the scene might be able to do,” Mikkelsen recently told Vulture about the nude torture scene. “It was a scene where I tortured him and he’s stripped naked to the chair, which was kind of radical. We’ve never seen Bond naked, and we’ve never seen him that fragile, and then obviously there are some undertones with the rope.”
“We were discussing how to approach it,” the actor continued, “and we just went further out with something that was really brutal and insane…[at one point Le Chiffre] actually cut [Bond] up somewhere, and he had to suffer with that for a while. At a certain point, director Martin Campbell was just smiling and said, ‘Boys, come back to the table. This is a Bond film. We can’t go there.’”
So much for an X-rated Bond scene. As Mikkelsen concluded, “We were lost in our indie world, right? You have to respect that. It is a Bond film. That’s the framework you need to understand.”
YIKES BABES. thanks for reining in the edgelords, campbell lol wtf

said it in the tags and now I’ll say it out loud: should’ve let them do it, ya cowards
Thing is, the scene in the book of Casino Royale is pretty much Like That. It’s got way over the top sexual overtones, and LeChiffre has him like tied up naked to a wicker chair with the bottom of the seat cut out, and then he like tortures his balls for hours to the point where there’s concerns Bond won’t be able to have kids. LeChiffre is calling him stuff like “boy” and it’s just very… weird? So like, yeah, Mikkelsen and Craig were totally going there, but it’s kind of also canon.
It’s so weird that Casino Royale is the first of the Bond books and launched a 50+ year franchise… reading it, I was like “why were dudes so into this?” Like Bond nearly gets blown up (and is pretty shaken up about it), gets tortured in a really sexualized creepy way, and he loses the girl….
it was 1953 and a lot of the readers had gone through WWII. Bond got to travel, which was restricted, he got to eat all the food he wanted for a readership who was still under rationing, he faced perils and the book acknowledged he was hurt by them, he loved and lost, things WWII soldiers and civilians were familiar with. he is infantilized by a superior/opposition but fights back against it…something that might be a non-ranking army grunt’s dream Casino Royale is bang bang 1950s fiction that fills the same role that less mainstream romance and fanfiction does. dudes have vaguely s/m kinky narrative fantasies too. the context-specific question for CS should be “what narrative build up and release might someone who fought in a war get out of this?” and it’s, not surprisingly, not that different from the narrative structure queer peeps and women use for fanfiction or horror authors use
