Maram al-Massri, A Red Cherry on a White-tiled Floor: Selected Poems (trans. Khaled Mattawa)
There is such a place as fairyland - but only children can find the way to it. And they do not know that it is fairyland until they have grown so old that they forget the way. One bitter day, when they seek it and cannot find it, they realize what they have lost; and that is the tragedy of life. On that day the gates of Eden are shut behind them and the age of gold is over. Henceforth they must dwell in the common light of common day. Only a few, who remain children at heart, can ever find that fair, lost path again; and blessed are they above mortals. They, and only they, can bring us tidings from that dear country where we once sojourned and from which we must evermore be exiles. The world calls them its singers and poets and artists and story-tellers; but they are just people who have never forgotten the way to fairyland.

he never wrote me poems. we would fuck in his car or on his bed where others girls had been or in the shower or while i was crying. we saw each other naked so often i have the image painted on the back of my eyelids. he ripped my underwear off. i was always vulnerable. i woke him up with kisses, he woke me up with hickies. for a long time, i thought they were the same thing.
i asked him once while we both got high why it was that i could write novels about him until the words got tired of being anagrams of his name - but at the same time he would never reciprocate. he blew a smoke ring and broke it with his finger.Ā ādunno,ā he said. we would fuck again later.
i found him once sitting on my floor staring at a picture from when i was young.Ā āgod,ā he said,Ā āi really fucked you up.ā
You give me one week of space and I use the time to sink so deep into my HurtĀ that I donāt feel anything when you touch me. While you sleep with the lights on, I run onto your roofĀ and focus on the car stopped at the end of your street. Ā There was a time when being in a relationshipĀ felt easy but I canāt remember it now. Here, as my own drool drips down my chin and I beat, āthis was supposed to be differentā into my legs, I feel so familiar.Ā I think I make myself lonelyĀ because itās a feeling I know.Ā I think Iāve been beating myself up for so longĀ that this Hurt has started to feel like home. If I ever get to sit with my heart in a quiet room, I am going to have a lot of explaining to do.

i met god at three am at a train station, he couldnāt even look me in the eye. after all heās done, i donāt blame him. he walked off the platform and in-front an oncoming train. after all heās seen, i donāt blame him.

I keep writing posts from perspective of a child, because even tho I already grew up Iām re-living everything that ever happened to me as a child every day, but Iām processing it with adult brain this time, and this means I only now actually have the understanding and vocabulary needed to put it into words, I can only now verbalize it. As a child thereās so much guilt and shame just because itās impossible to put trauma into words, and if at any point of life you do manage to put it into words, itās never too late, do it. Verbalizing your own perspective makes you strong.Ā
God, are you listening to me praying?
what would i do for the person i love? // what would i ask of the person i love?
You are not IN the universe, you ARE the universe, an intrinsic part of it. Ultimately you are not a person, but a focal point where the universe is becoming conscious of itself. What an amazing miracle.
