Unfortunately, every fandom I’ve ever been in, even when WLW shippers have done nothing to deserve it, have been accused of being racists. I don’t doubt some are because nobody is perfect, but as a lesbian who ships lesbian ships BECAUSE I am a lesbian, I am SO over being told I’m racist because I don’t ship m/f interracial ships. No, no, no…I don’t ship ANY m/f ships BECAUSE I’M A LESBIAN! *bangs head on my desk in complete frustration*

here’s the thing. white people, by default, are racist. that is what almost every single one of us learns, unless we have parents who actively teach us otherwise, all the way until the moment we start to unlearn it.

fandoms of white-dominant shows (i.e. ones that aren’t explicitly “the Black show” etc.) are going to be numerically dominated by those same default-racist white people.

now, fandom has a long progressive tradition, so fans might (might) be less racist than average white people (this is highly debatable but let’s do the benefit of the doubt thing), but still any given fandom is going to be dominated by people who have been taught to value whiteness above everything else. that is what is most likely to happen and what does happen in most circumstances.

and, unless you are a person who is actively working to unlearn racism, you are unlikely to be able to see subtler forms of racism, like only ever shipping white characters, say. just not overtly saying “x people are inferior” is not a marker of not being racist. anything that values whiteness over other categories comes from the same place.

so, i will guarantee no one is telling you you’re a racist for not shipping a m/f interracial ship, any more than SWEN have ever told people they are homophobic for not shipping a queer ship. and, just like we have always said, you don’t have to ship it, but you do need to acknowledge that it’s important representation for people and not actively oppose it. see the distinction?

Oh, how I dislike this aspect of fandom. It’s a never-ending process of having to pick sides. Are we on the queer team or are we on the not-white team? I, for one, wish people would just get their fucking acts together.

Underrepresented ships are valid. All of them.

Why you don’t like it personally is immaterial. The point is that when we see something that we know is outside of the never-ending sea of white heteronormativity, we celebrate its existence.

1. A rising tide lifts all boats.

2. Stop putting queer fans of color in positions where they have to choose. It’s fucked up.

3. I don’t ship it, but I can respect that you do, is a valid response.
