Audio Drama Sunday - 21st September ✨

Ooooh I had SO much fun listening to my audio dramas this week - let me tell you:

🌲 @hellofromthehallowoods (199) HALLOWOODS, HOW HAVE I EVEN SURVIVED WITHOUT YOU THIS SUMMER? This episode had everything. The writing of this show is just so fricken phenomenal, I experience sooo many emotions within the span of this episode. Virgil finding the truth was gut wrenching, Diggory’s cool utilitarianism, OLIVIER!! I was internally screaming with delight in my car the moment in started raining, then was IMMEDIATELY silenced with remembering that Riot wasn’t there (in so many senses of the term)!! And it was the first thing he asked! And she kissed Shelby aaaahhhhhhh!!! All these emotions without even getting into Percy’s feelings about his father, LEM’s little snack or how Shelby and Hector are like two peas in a pod - if only they could spend more time together. This SHOW, MAN. I obviously listen to so much audio drama, but it’s story moments like these that really just make me fall in love with the medium all over again!

🧋 @hinaypod (68) Bless Mari’s ginormous heart for going to check on RH! It was so interesting to hear more reflections his and the Benefactor’s relationship! And ooh Other Mari is so cryptic! I feel like she’s talking about Laura and Donner but is she??? I don’t know! Also the times when she addresses her Nanay directly hit so much harder now!

👨‍🚀 @hollowdisciplepod (07) Omg the little girl was Rosa 😭 and Murphy! What a man! 😭 I’m enjoying this show so much! The discussion at the end about how they ethically can’t really leave is VERY interesting. What off Earth are they going to do?? 

🐏 @landsendpod (04-05) I really need to see more people talking about this show!! Environmental horror is SO good in general and the team here weave queerness into the story so beautifully. The acting is top notch and, of course, it’s Tin Can Audio, the sound design and music are immaculate! Ep 5, Summer, felt like a finale but I am very much hoping for more! Please listen if you haven’t already! 

🐙 In other exciting podcast news, I listened to the new Minus 219 ( @minus219pod ) trailer and it sounds so good! I’ve been hearing such good things about the development of this show and you should totally check out their crowdfunder! ✨

Audio Drama Sunday - 3rd August

I’m so close to finishing my to-listen list of podcasts, I say, constantly adding more of them.

@landsendpod’s Land’s End: A Shepherd's Tale — episode 4: the difference between Isaac and the Shepherd’s perception of this plot is everything to me. Isaac is living his best life in a modern romance novel while the Shepherd goes through the horrors. It’s nice that there’s an expert on board, and I’m so excited to find out how the series ends. Isaac doesn’t seem to have many self-preservation skills — but that just makes things more interesting. 🐑

Circles — episode 1 - episode 4: I’m a bit late on board for this Covid-era Halloween podcast. On the other hand, the chance to actually finish a show in about two hours was too much to pass up. I’m always delighted to hear Beth Eyre in a podcast, I liked the light commentary on the pandemic (stay in your circle!) and I enjoyed the twist on YA horror plots. Having to figure out what happened to the main cast as teenagers makes things much more fun. If you like well-done sequels to beloved kids horror (like a darker Scooby Doo), you might like Circles. 🔘

13 Minutes or Less — episode 1 - episode 6: this show definitely deserves a second season. It involves a pizza chef getting sent out on delivery to a variety of weird pizza orders. There are definite fairy-tale vibes to this podcast: the protagonist is kind and honest and curious, and it works out well for her. The episodes are sweet and creative, it’s a very light and pleasant listen and the cyclical ending is just fantastic. ⏱️

@remnantspod — episode 1: finally, I’m getting some of the context to Real Remnants. I already enjoyed Eira Major’s Real Remnants series, discussing all the historical inspiration for the show, but the first episode told a really interesting story. I can’t think of many other podcasts that get this close to being period pieces. The main character of the episode, an art forger rising to success in World War II, is fascinating. Plus, The Apprentice is an excellent actor. Their gasp as they drop the teacup was a gut-wrenching way of breaking the immersion. 📦

@freshmeatcast — episode 1: what a fun horror! The idea of meat crawling around is a great idea for a monster and I only wish I’d started this podcast earlier. I’m looking forward to hearing more about what this creature is, the role Mike played in Roz’s life and which of these poor, likeable employees will survive the night. The banging and scraping sound effects were definitely my favourite part of the episode. Everything has already started, it’s already too late… but nobody knows it yet. 🥩

I really need to catch up on the new Malevolent episode, and I just can’t wait for the next The Holmwood Foundation episode on Wednesday!

Audio Drama Sunday - 3rd August ✨

 I finished up NQD this week and I can’t stop thinking about it! Easily my favourite addition to the world of vampiric audio dramas so far!! 

🍎 @notquitedeadpod I listened through to the finale. My heart *hurts* and I don’t really have words to explain what a satisfying ending this was. Alfie pointed out very early in the finale that Bonham’s lab was all theatre. It shouldn’t have been surprising that the science was a performance as well. God, what a rollercoaster of emotions (I actually felt like I couldn’t breathe listening to Alfie’s panic at times) but ending on such a soft note of gentle hope for the future. There is so much I've adored about this show, it’s so great to be able to add the ending to that list! Definitely looking forward to whatever is next! 

🏴‍☠️ @levianpodcast-desperado (1.7-1.8) I love it when audio drama lets me have conversations like this in real life:

Me: hey, guess what I learned today?  Wife: what?  Me: The shark man in my fantasy podcast has internalised homophobia  Wife: . . . I’m not sure I understand, but I’m happy for you. 

🧳 Travelling Light @monstrousproductions (53) WHY have you not spoken to Óli in TWO WEEKS? Aside from that, this episode is the first time I’ve really, truly considered just how different the Traveller would be if they had instead taken that other path and boarded the Guillemot way back when. I mean, probably still creating trouble and in moral quandaries, but damn!! 

🐏 @landsendpod (03) I can’t believe I haven’t heard more people talking about this show - it’s so good!! Isaac is a freak (cautiously affectionate) and I’m looking forward to finding out what he makes of the herd. Assuming the Shepherd can free himself from this trap!! 

🧛🏻‍♂️ @theholmwoodfoundation (03-04) Actually obsesseddd with Mina standing up for herself and refusing to be spoken over. My QUEEN. Taking that energy into my new job for SURE. I really like Tom and, for all his insane privilege, I’m sorry that he’s been dragged into all this! It did make me laugh that he was complaining about being an emergency contact whilst being an objectively good port of call in an actual emergency! I went crazy at the cliffhanger at the end of episode 3. I’m just not sure I trust Arthur!! (Which is really convenient for me bc I think Jeremy and Maddie might be endgame in about 10 eps time hehe) 

🥊 @killjamxxx (09) Bellamy backstory!!!!!! I think he’s been hiding a serious jammer skillset… Actually, I think he’s hiding a lot… I love Faustina’s moral outrage (me too girl, me too) and I’m SO excited to meet Ms Konda in the next ep! What could go wrong??

It’s Audio Drama Sunday and I am on vacation, which ironically means I am not at all caught up on podcasts. What a blessing, to have the stories in my ears for work to make that work pleasant and to have rest that is actually restful. But let’s talk about the episodes that I actually got around to!

🐏 What kind of romance novel day is ya boi Isaac having in @landsendpod??? I love this guy. What a good counterpoint to the Shepherd, and finally a hint of answered questions about what’s going on with the sheep. And, evidently, the Shepherd himself as well. Whether or not Isaac is right remains to be seen—whether or not his spirit of scientific inquiry will lead into a Jurassic Park situation is something I’m VERY interested to find out.

🗝️ I am a huge fan of everything Jesse Hall makes because I love stories that are inextricable from their setting. Even when Tales of THATTOWN did forays into sci-fi and dystopia, it felt true and real and grounded in a way that I feel is rare in fiction in general. There’s so much more you can do in a fiction podcast too, and Hall takes as much advantage as he can. All that said, his new show, @lockboxpod, does not disappoint. The framing device is strange and surreal in a way that I’m really tickled by, and the story itself, which at first presents itself as a fairly simple premise, zig-zags into a small-town horror of corruption and bigotry. I’m really looking forward to the next installment.

🌕 This week I started listening to Chaika! I’d heard good things, and though I’m only a few episodes in, but I’m finding this story of isolation and synthetic friendship really engaging. If you’re a fan of Girl In Space, this is along similar lines with a very different mystery. Whether or not the bad guy is capitalism remains to be seen.

Listen. I know this isn’t comprehensive. There’s new Kakos Industries and Night Vale and Travelling Light. The Deca Tapes started their second season. Don’t even get me started on Malevolent. The Last Dance is staring me down Kubrick-style. But I’ll catch up when I can, because this vacation must not be wasted. See you next week!
