Vanessa - One Shot (2024)
Hi everyone! It's been a while 😅 life has been lifing but it's BEYOND time for an update!
I wanted to share a one shot comic I created while taking a grad class in sequential art last year. (Unfortunately, that's the only class I took at the institution - a private arts school - because both scholarship money ran out and working full time while taking classes is insane!)
The comic is called "Vanessa" and is about a Hmong-American girl who, with her boyfriend's support, performs a very vulnerable song at a music festival - and it touches someone who needs to hear it. It's kinda my reflection on my own hesitations and struggles sharing vulnerable art, but how powerful it can be when we do it correctly and from a genuine place. There's much more to the story and I would love to continue it one day. I also attached a song below, Before by Tekoa, which always makes me think of the story. I would play it often as I drove home from class at the end of a long day.
I hope this is helpful and encouraging for someone out there. The world feels like a very dark place these days, but I feel like in times like these, artists are called to both help us face the dark but also remind us of the light.
Peace and blessings everyone 🫶🏾
