4.12 ⁘ The Sword in the Stone
If they ever make another Petals on the Wind movie they should give Cathy a toxic lesbian subplot
I think it would be really fun if her toxic lesbian subplot was with Yolanda. They have an intense rivalry. Part of the reason Cathy hates her so much is because she's a lot more free with her sexuality than Cathy let's herself be. In Petals on the wind after Cathy comes back to reclaim her role Yolanda brags to her that she used her makeup and wore her clothes and that felt very homoerotic to me. There's something very homoerotic about either wanting to remake yourself in someone else's image or climb into their skin and become them. Cathy doesn't like who Yolanda is as a person, however she is beautiful and talented and we know from her marriage to Julian that that is enough for her.
Came here to say this. Cathy and Yolanda have plenty of spark. That's what Chris sees in her right?
Right- why is Cathy so interested in Yolanda's breasts and telling us how small they are in the first place?

I love this performance and I love the everyone-is-at-least-a-bit-gay vibe of it, but still want to know who decided to make Jack and Algernon hot for each other given... well... *spoilers*
😆
This interview with Ncuti Gatwa crossed my dash again, and I was reminded of how much I like it. Because it makes the rare Third Argument for representation in fiction, the argument I think is the best, and I'm always happy to see it. I quote:
At times, Gatwa’s casting in those projects has been dismissed as an exercise in ‘box-ticking’. Gatwa scoffs. ‘First of all, you don’t know anything about me. Secondly, tick fcking boxes! People need to be fcking seen. What are you going to do, tell the same stories? Have the same people fronting things for all of eternity? Representation and inclusivity and branching out… it enriches us all. How embarrassing. You people with your tiny mindsets – open a book, look out the window and then f*ck off.’ (source)
What do I mean by the Third Argument? Well, I'm not sure I've ever made a post about this directly, but as far as I can see it, there are three main arguments for greater diversity in popular media. The first two are the most common, and they go like this:
It is good for media to be diverse because it is good for people to see people like them on screen. That is, the beneficiaries are marginalized people.
It is good for media to be diverse because it is good for people to see and learn about people who are not like them through art. That is, the beneficiaries are non-marginalized people, who then (hopefully) pass on the benefit by treating marginalized people better.
These two arguments are the source of a lot of debate here on ye olde tumblr. Despite both being arguments for representation, they pull in different directions. What counts as 'good' representation for the purposes of Argument 1 often would not be good for the purposes of Argument 2, and vice versa. Authentic versus sympathetic. Ugly or over-sanitized. You see this debate play out constantly. It's really hard for a piece of - say - queer media to do both at once.
But these debates tend to leave out Argument 3, the one that Gatwa is making above. And that argument cuts through a lot of this debate.
3. It is good for media to be diverse because art needs variety. The beneficiary of representation is art itself, absent any social effects that may or may not be present.
For this argument, diverse stories are intrinsically good. It is good to make art that's not just the same thing you've seen a hundred times before. Putting the kinds of people who don't often make it into mainstream media into your art is an extremely efficient way to make that happen. It's not the only method, but it's a really good method.
For representation to be 'good representation' according to Argument 3, all it needs to be is interesting. A story you haven't heard before, at least not in that medium. That which counts as 'bad representation' by the lights of this argument are stock characters, like the Eternally Patient Mother, the Gay Best Friend, the Wise Black Advisor. Perhaps there was a time in which these characters were new, but that time has long passed. There's no art in pulling a bog-standard character trope off the shelf. Show us a new kind of guy. The world is infinitely diverse. You're not going to run out. Telling the same stories with the same voices for all eternity, as Gatwa says, is boring. Even if there was nothing else wrong with it, this would be. Art isn't supposed to be boring.
And that's why Argument 3 is my favourite. I do want the world to be a better place, of course, and I think art is a part of that. But the main job of art is to be good as art. And diversity in all aspects of the production of art makes art better.
"It's not about adding diversity for the sake of diversity, it's about subtracting homogeneity for the sake of realism." --Mary Robinette Kowal
do you love me now?
I just adore Arwen so much. I adore that both Arthur and Gwen grow and change outside and within that relationship and yet the love they share doesn’t fade or diminish, it only ever strengthens. I adore that every challenge they come across is no match for the love they share. I adore that they both learn to be better for one another while also never expecting the other to change completely but showing the boundaries in place that they have and sticking to them no matter what.
God I just adore them and they don’t get enough love!
THE BORGIAS (2011) + Botticelli art ↴ DAVID OAKES as Juan Borgia
"Juan of Gandia, ‘the pope’s right eye,’ seems destined, in everyone’s view, to ensure the greatness of the Borgia family. Riding a chestnut horse adorned with gold ornaments and silver bells, Juan wears a velvet hat trimmed with pearls and a brown outfit whose sleeves are embroidered with jewels. ‘This comedy prince, all covered in jewels,’ writes Burchard ironically, nevertheless manages to astonish the Romans, who are well-versed in matters of luxury." — The Man of Sorrows (circa 1500) — The Resurrected Christ (circa 1480)
Ah good old Alexander VI - pushed through financial reform of the papcy, cut down on waste and excess of the Vatican and cardinals... couldn't resist draping his favourite boy in jewels...
Arthur and Gwen but not in an “I can fix him” type of way. In a “he can fix himself” way. In an “all the parts are there, but he needs to build himself” type of way. In a “humbled and grateful for it” type of way. In a “he loves her so much it consumes every bit of bad in him” type of way. In a “he wants to be the kind of person she deserves” type of way. In a “his admiration of her transforms him” type of way. In a “seeing her influence transforms Gwen for the better, too” type of way. In a “Gwen grows in her confidence into a wise young woman” type of way. In a “they’re in love” type of way.

This! So much this! This is what I love about that transition from Ealdor to 'the man inside' to Sigan to her cottage to Vivian.
For the writing prompt: Touch- #35. kissing their bruises and scars (couple of your choice!)
Went with Arthur and Gwen (BBC Merlin) because this prompt fits them so well 💜
"You are foolish."
Despite being the Queen, there were many things Gwen did for her husband. She liked to mend some of his shirts and help him bathe.
She also enjoyed helping change his bandages after a skirmish or battle. Arthur winced as Gwen wrapped the clean bandage around his waist.
"So foolish, to risk your life." Gwen scolded, throwing the bloodied bandages
"I am sorry, my love. Next time, I shall ask the enemy to strike me gentler.” Arthur replied sarcastically. He sat up on their bed
"Guinevere..." Arthur sighed, holding out his hand, "I am well."
"I do not enjoy you risking your life so," Gwen said softly, "I never have."
He gently put his hand on her cheek, gently stroking her cheek. She turned her head slightly to kiss his palm. She may be upset but she loved him still.
"I will always fight with my men. Men I trust to have my back as I have theirs." Arthur told her gently, "I do not wish to frighten you."
He tugged Gwen closer to him and rested her head on his chest. Gwen pressed a kiss to the bandaged wound as Arthur's hand gently stroked her curls. She found another scar from a long-healed wound and kissed that too. It reminded her that no matter how many battles he faced, he would survive. He would always return to her.
three word prompt: Don’t say it.
This shouldn’t have happened. It was improper for a woman to be alone with a man she was not related to in any capacity, let alone a serving girl alone with the future king. And yet, there Gwen was, tending to Arthur after a particularly nasty fall from his horse during the joust. She should have never thrown him that token, should have never convinced herself that it was a lighthearted gesture, all in good fun, a part of the game. It distracted him, and that distraction had gotten him hurt.
“Gwen,” came Arthur’s voice, a soft, slightly pained mumble. She ignored it, wiping his face with a cloth. He said her name again, and again she ignored it, her eyes steadily focused on a spot just above his head. If she didn’t look down, she wouldn’t be tempted to do something improper, or stupid, like press her lips against his forehead to let him know he wasn’t as alone as he might have felt in the moment.
“Guinevere.”
Though the use of her full name was firmer, his hand encircling her wrist remained gentle. At last, she put down the cloth, looking into his eyes with a sigh.
“Arthur.”
“It wasn’t your fault.”
She looked away, shaking her head in disagreement.
“Yes, it was. It was foolish. I forgot myself. And now you’re bruised and sore and it happened because of me.”
“If I had to lose that match a thousand times to get you to speak to me again, I would.”
She froze, her gaze returning to him quicker than lightning flashing. She was, after all, the one who had tried to put a stop to this. The clandestine meetings in stairwells, their fingers brushing as they passed each other in the great hall. A rendezvous in the woods, or if they were particularly emboldened, her cottage after dark. And she wasn’t angry with him, nor with herself. Princes and maidens dallied with each other, it was in nearly every fairy story she’d read. But it could not continue. The joust was a momentary lapse in judgement, a fantasy she had allowed herself. And as she gazed upon what it had cost her, something inside of her broke.
“You can’t say things like that.”
“I can.”
She huffed out a breath, rolling her eyes lightly. Ever argumentative, her Arthur was, especially about the things (and people) he wanted.
“You can’t. Not anymore.”
Arthur shifted, lifting himself up slowly so his back was against the headboard. Guinevere, in turn, shifted closer, her hands hovering above him as she sat by his side on his bed. He reached up and took them carefully, interlacing their fingers and giving them both a quick squeeze. Any words that remained within her fell silent when he lifted their joined hands and kissed the backs of hers. She didn’t think, leaning forward until he met her where she was, a kiss as light as air the only forewarning for the tumble she was about to take. She removed her hands from his, holding his face while his hands found her waist. It was all too familiar, this, him, and yet, it remained dizzying, leaving her breathless and feeling as though the world beneath her melted away, and all that remained was them. His lips were at her neck and her eyes were closed when she heard him inhale sharply. Immediately she opened them, her hands flying to his ribcage to try and stabilize him.
“I’m fine,” Arthur insisted, waving her off despite his wincing. Gwen exhaled, twisting her fingers through a few of her curls.
“Guinevere,” Arthur murmured again, pulling her closer to him. She allowed herself to go, curling up by his side, her head on his shoulder.
“This is impossible,” she reminded him, pressing a kiss against his bare shoulder, “you know that.”
He sighed.
“We’ll find a way.”
“How can you be so certain?”
He looked down at her, his eyes filled with something she had seen only once before, when her father looked at her mother.
“Don’t say it.”
It was as much a whisper as a plea, because if he told her, there was no going back. There was no pretending that what they had wasn’t the most powerful thing either of them had ever felt. There was no pretending it wasn’t worth it to risk her life, her status, everything, for the chance to be with him. There was no pretending she didn’t feel it too. There was no pretending she wouldn’t do everything in her power to be with him, always.
Gwen kissed him quickly, just once. Arthur held her against him, and neither of them spoke.
Later, she would admit to herself that she was incorrect.
They had passed the point of no return long ago.
All that was left was to admit it.
SCRUBS 10x01 My Return
New Scrubs has no right to be good. It is a late addition to a long wave of nostalgia-peddling reboots that has mostly burned goodwill and suppressed real creativity. But ... it actually is good! These are the same characters at a new phase of life. The new med students are engaging, HD's new nemesis is delicious. I don't know how I feel about re-running JD and Elliot's off-again relationship drama, but at least they're doing even that fairly well.
Scrubs is very special to me and I ahd serious misgivings about them coming bavk.
Thanks guys for not screwing this up.
Pirates of the Caribbean having a greater love story than basically all romance genre movies will always be kind of hilarious but amazing. I will genuinely go to these for a romance fix over what's seen as the all time great romance movies.
LOL RIGHT? I feel that way about a bunch of stuff, it's so funny. I remember watching the first two seasons of Star Trek Disco and was like, I didn't come here for romance actually, I came here for scifi shit but you're giving me THIS
like, what am i supposed to do? WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO??
Hot damn, I had finally got these two out my system and then these gifs pop up again and oooff. S1 ST:DISCO gave me so much I didnt know I wanted.

are you in love with him?
h o p e l e s s l y.
Why yes, attaching a Jane Eyre quote to something actually IS a way to guarantee I will watch it... 😁
Rewatching The Borgias (for the twentieth time) and I am struck by how the period inspiration didn't stop at fabulous sets and costumes- the staging and blocking also sometimes looks like Renaissance paintings. Such a nice touch.
