I took a small hiatus from creating art this year while I recovered from surgery. Happy to share that summer is here and I’m back! Today was my youngest’s birthday and the walkthrough for this year’s Pageant of the Masters cast. For a few minutes as I waited to be called onstage, I sketched to kill time. Drawing in the warm sun, surrounded by my family and awesome people brought me such joy. 🥰🎨🙌 . . . Proceeds from print sales will go to the Camp Fire relief effort. ❤️🌲❤️ ———- One month ago today, nearly 52,000 people fled my hometown of Paradise, California and the surrounding areas in fear for their lives, trying to outrun the Camp Fire which was spreading at a speed of one football field per second. The flames caught the entire town off guard in the early morning hours, and many who evacuated were only able to make it out with the clothes on their backs. Most citizens made it out safely, but at least 85 souls were not as fortunate. It took a mere twelve hours for the flames of the deadly fire to rip through town and destroy nearly every home and business in its path, leveling at least 90% of the buildings in the town of Paradise. Please don’t forget the families and friends I have known my whole life (and all the other thousands of broken-hearted residents) while they navigate their next steps to heal and recover. I loved this sign. It was always a significant symbol of returning home, especially after I graduated high school and left for college. On some late nights, my friends and I would pull off the road and take photos next to the sign, mainly as proof to show to new friends not familiar with our hometown that Paradise DOES exist! Located on the lower end of town on Skyway, this sign welcomed visitors who entered Paradise who drove up from Chico. It reads, “May you find Paradise to be all its name implies.” November 8th, 2018... While watching the news coverage and seeing the photos posted online from hometown friends who were evacuating during the initial hours of the Camp Fire, I felt like I was watching a horror movie. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I still can’t. Once I saw the image of the Paradise sign burning, I completely lost it... 😢 - - - - - 5x7 Ink on paper sketch of the Paradise town welcome sign. My childhood town of Paradise is gone. The entire town, wiped out by the #CampFire. The years I spent from birth until college... gone in an instant. Paradise is a small, tight-knit community of wonderful people who have been stripped of EVERYTHING. As of this morning, there are at least 23 fatalities, at least 6,700 buildings (mostly homes) destroyed, and over 6,000 displaced families. The population of Paradise was just 26,000, prior to this tragedy. Most fatalities are assumed to have happened as residents were frantically attempting to flee, as the fire caught almost everyone off guard. The flames rapidly spread at a rate of 80 football fields per minute. The residents able to escape did so with their lives and the clothes on their back. Some had enough time to locate and save their scared pets. These people need help.
