I know Frank does proper surgery on his kids’ broken toys. He makes them step back and watch from a distance. He wears a face mask, Abby’s satin hair bonnet, and the apron from the kitchen. The toys get “anaesthesia”, he checks their “vitals”. For soft toys, he uses proper sutures, narrating what knots he’s using to the kids. He explains that [toy] has been through a lot and needs to be played with gently for the next couple of weeks, and that it’s slowly waking up from anaesthesia now, they can come hold it.

When he and Mel start getting serious enough for her to meet the kids, and she sees it for the first time, she is so endeared. Mel sits with the kids watching the whole procedure. She tells him later that this is such an amazing way to prepare the kids in case they ever need surgery. They’ll know exactly what’s happening to them. Frank blinks at her. This had genuinely never occurred to him.
