I also believe that Pure Vanilla wanting to understand Shadow Milk is a metaphor for him wanting to better understand deceit and doubt. Since he now realizes that truth isn't absolute, he wants to be open to different perspectives and better understand the unknown. As the holder of the souljam of truth, he generally wants to better understand his other half so they can properly co exist to create the virtue of knowledge. He knows that he has the potential to understand Shadow Milk like no one else because Shadow Milk understood him so well due to sharing a souljam, so it would work the other way around

The way that this is still only part of the reason. I don't think a lot of people realize that this goes deeper than your average, cheesy "let's befriend the villain" arc
