nie huaisang is thee most character of all time. he's a prettyboy who's obsessed with fans. he's the weakest cultivator of his generation and never uses his sword. his nickname is the headshaker because he doesn't know anything. he spent a decade masterminding a plan to secretly manipulate basically every major player in the cultivation world in order to reveal the truth about his brother's murderer. he conned a guy into sacrificing himself to bring wei wuxian back to life. he tricked lan xichen into murdering jin guangyao. he failed high school three times.

The funniest thing on my dash right now is folks who are familiar with The Untamed (i.e., the 2019 TV series) only via GIFsets reblogged by their mutuals honestly being under the impression that it’s, like, a period romantic comedy or something and going “wait, that guy is an evil wizard?”

grading the dramatic entrances of The Untamed, in no particular order

Wen Chao at the Cloud Recesses - Yes, he’s garbage, and he interrupted Jiang Cheng’s carefully prepared gift-giving, which is unforgiveable, but you cannot deny that this is a moderately dramatic entrance. From a piece of shit. 5/10, hate him, consolation prize for most punchable face.

Lan Wangji on the search for Wei Wuxian - The slow climb up the stairs. The epic scenery. The unsubtle threat. 8/10, points deducted because the follow-up is anticlimactic. We should have gotten to see some ass-kicking.

Lan Wangji at the hostage summer camp - Improvement! Isn’t letting the scenery do all the work, but letting it work for him instead. More slow swishy robes. More murder in his expression. No sign of having a broken leg because he keeps the pain inside. 9/10, excellent way to not be dead, no wonder Wei Wuxian rapidly develops a technique for flirting in hostage situations.

the BEST dynamic between any two mdzs characters that are not immediately related is like. being extremely judgy about how the other one treats their sibling. the sheer Contempt they have for each other for how they handled family dramas, it's beautiful. and painful. there is so much.

like, nhs? nhs, planning his great revenge, looks at jiang cheng and cannot fucking believe jiang cheng had the audacity to 'disown' and 'kill' (nhs does not have all the details) his own brother. looks at lan xichen who let his didi get whipped and, being a spoiled youngest child himself, has no inhibitions about hurting lxc for his own goals.

lxc? watching jc let wei wuxian descend into alcoholism and demonic cultivation? watching nhs ruin his own morals to get revenge, betraying every ideal nie mingjue stood for? he keeps quiet because he is lan xichen, hes got that oldest daughter syndrome, but oh, he does have opinions.

jc, the youngest kid, feeling the pressure of being the sect heir since forever, becomes the sect leader as a fucking teenager and watches the nies - watches nie huaisang being absolutely NOT prepared to take over. thinks about how nie mingjue knew he had no other heirs and still spoiled little sangsang, allowed him to become the headshaker. jc post-canon, always having been judged by lwj for letting wwx isolate himself - now watches lwj let xichen go into seclusion. ironic.

wen ning? forever bitchy about jc letting wei wuxian down during the burial mounds era.

lwj? obvious issues with jiang cheng.

nmj considers wei wuxian a traitor both to yunmeng jiang and to jiang cheng.

everyone except for maybe lwj thinks wen qing a monster for allowing her brother to become the ghost general.

and so on, and so forth.

even better, it's not like they think that themselves they were 100% Right. they are also bitter about their own actions, they also regret many things. nhs couldn't ever face his brother again after what he did for him. wei wuxian hopes the secret about the golden core is never revealed. wen ning wishes his sister hadn't led them to jinlintai. lwj stares at the quiet hanshi, the lonely shadow inside it.

there are no correct answers! there are no good solutions! there is just a bunch of adult people who made choices and watched others make choices and are extremely bitchy about those choices.

Q: Can you share with us what the role of Wei Wuxian means to you?

What Wei Wuxian brought to me isn’t something that can be explained easy. In fact, when we finished filming, I told myself that I had to step out of this role, leave him there, and return him to the one he loves. He is probably a role that I will never forget. And he also had the biggest impact on me. Basically, I want to tell him: thank you, and I hope that he will live well.
