with regard to cinnamoroll and wangxian, here's how it actually goes down.

during the 13 year timeskip, lan wangji, fully believing cinnamoroll to be a rabbit, becomes a fan of cinnamoroll. during this time, he manages to accumulate a small mountain's worth of cinnamoroll-themed merchandise.

then wei wuxian returns. postcanon, lan wangji gets wei wuxian into sanrio as well; wei wuxian, also believing cinnamoroll to be a rabbit, becomes an even bigger fan of cinnamoroll. he is so enthusiastic about this tiny sanrio character that he somehow manages to accumulate an even larger mountain of cinnamoroll-themed merchandise than lan wangji.

somehow, both parties then independently discover that cinnamoroll is in fact a dog, not a rabbit.

however, neither party knows the other party knows as well.

lan wangji does not say anything to wei ying, because by this point wei ying is already a huge cinnamoroll fan and he doesn't want to ruin that for wei ying. wei ying should get to freely enjoy his sanrio merchandise without suffering from his phobia.

wei wuxian also does not say anything to lan zhan, because he knows that if he tells lan zhan at this point, lan zhan will get rid of all of lan zhan's own cinnamoroll merchandise out of consideration for wei wuxian. lan zhan might even blame himself for not realizing earlier that cinnamoroll is a dog, and wei wuixan doesn't want that. lan zhan should not have to give up something he enjoys on wei wuxian's account.

thus, this state of mutual believed-ignorance continues for a full year.

until.

until fucking jiang cheng opens his fat mouth and goes "wait you know that's a dog, right?"

and both parties promptly start whaling on him.

Jiang Yanli 🤝 Jin Zixuan raised by angry controlling mother + distant emotionally unavailable father

I think it's incredibly easy to be sympathetic to Yanli and see how the trauma from her disfunctional parents has shaped her personality and created very specific coping mechanisms, but it makes me sad that people very rarely seem to extend that same sympathy to Zixuan - perhaps because we get to see less of his home life, and it's all filtered through the POV of a protagonist who doesn't like him. at any rate, what is shown is that he has a mother who does not hestitate to publically humiliate him and cares far more about her own interests than his happiness and fulfilment, and a father who... well, it's difficult to imagine JGS having much of a real relationship with/influence over a son who feels as strongly about honour and doing the right thing as Zixuan (see: standing up to Wen Chao, his friendship with and defense of Mianmian, leading the Jin forces during the war, confronting Yanli over believing she stole credit from a servant girl, etc.)

I can just really strongly imagine their relationship blossoming quickly on an emotional level because they both really crave that intimacy they lacked in their childhoods (Yanli had her brothers but she was always parentified and put on a pedastal, Zixuan had Mianmian but how close could they really get with a mother like Jin-furen, likely watching them like a hawk to look for Any Funny Business?), and given that it's canon that they stay up late talking and "tell each other everything", they were starting to break the cycle of horrible resentful marriages that traumatise their kids!!! 🥹🥹🥹 truly they were too powerful to be allowed to live

okay so it has come to my attention that neither i nor @mqfx has actually made an official post as to what is going on in october so here it is:

⭐️ join us for untamed october! ⭐️

what is untamed october you might ask? well, charlie mqfx and i decided that since it's been 5 years since CQL aired, it's time for a cql renaissance! starting on october 1st 2024, we will be rewatching cql (and maybe making fanworks to contribute to the fun!!)

don't worry about a schedule; we're all busy adults, and you can take it at your own pace. the point of it is to have fun and relive some of the whimsy we all had when cql was first airing! if you want to try and get some of your mutuals or friends who have never seen cql before to watch it, october is the time!! if you have fanart or a fanfic you've been wanting to post, october is it baby!!

if you want to participate with fanart, fanfic, gifsets, etc., feel free to tag your work with #untamed october or #untamedtober ! i'll be making sure to go through those tags all month to boost everyone's work!!
