stay here where it's warm

part one, part two, part three
Eddie laughs, loud and full of warmth, and for a moment, Buck isn’t worried at all. Not about how to navigate the strange new chasm that’s grown between them. Or how the indestructible thread that connected them across miles and hours and state lines, gleaming and golden and endless, got so twisted and tangled. Or how Buck’s supposed to get through five days alone with Eddie when sometimes, Buck looks at him and feels the same sense of awe people feel seeing the northern lights for the first time, like he’s witnessing something rare and beautiful and once-in-a-lifetime, and all he can do is stare, unblinking, and hope he doesn’t miss a second. This, right now, isn’t new at all. It’s comfortable and familiar, well-worn like an old sweater. It’s Buck, standing in a kitchen with Eddie’s laugh echoing in his ears, melting the ache from his bones like the sun on an early morning snow.
When Ravi gets food poisoning right before their ski trip, Buck has to spend five days alone with Eddie in a snowy mountain cabin after months of distance.
(or Buck, Eddie, and the Elephant in the Room go to Montana.)
