I used my new vacuum chamber and some slightly thinned down emerald rit dye. I soaked it under vacuumed for about 18 hours and then had to let it dry for 3 days. then I tossed it in a warm oven for a few hours just to dry it completely. Turning was a bit of a challenge as it was mostly end grain ended up sanding more than usual. I think it turned out perfect.
I’m making crochet hooks this week and here are my latest attempt at creatively coloring them. I use rit fabric dye to color them I have found the powdered works the best but I can mix custom colors with the liquid. The liquid doesn’t work as well with light colors like lite pink and yellow but the powdered yellow works great. Also I discovered that I need a set of wire gauge drill bits some of the wire gauge bits are much closer in size to the crochet hooks than my fractional drill bits.

I made this pen using hackberry wood and dyed it with teal and emerald dye. Hackberry is a boring wood that is light and doesn’t look very interesting, until you add color. Once it is dyed the grain pops like crazy and you get what we have here.

A couple new dyed wands I made this weekend. I tried mixing dyes on the orange one to get a more interesting color for the handle I used a red and orange mix over black dye. It gave it a nice effect and the orange tip looks just as I had hoped. The Red one looks good but didn’t turn out as I was hoping for I was going for more of a flame look. But I think it was the oak was a bad choice for this dye treatment the grain just gets a bit to dark.

Today I made a pen with walnut and acrylic this was my first mixed material blank. I bought anew easy wood tools negative rake cutter and it made turning this way easier. Tried a new technique today. I tried making a hollow form in a wand it worked and I learned a lot, I used a file to cut groves then a dremel with a burr bit to dig into groove and hollow it out. Then I used small strips of cloth backed sand paper to round the form. I should have made it larger it would have been easier. I think I will make a set of candle stick holders with this in the middle.
Just finished a few different new kits and got to try out a new negative rake carbide cutter from easy wood tools. The new cutter works great cuts as smooth or smother then very sharp conventional tools. The new kits I have m just not sure about the Mesa kits (the gold and chrome) and the executive kits (the satin in Black)I like. The vesper(the bottom two) however seems a bit clunky and heavy for my liking. What kit is your favorite? Please let me know
This week I tried a new style I was going for scales but it didn’t end up quite right. I am still trying to find proper green dye I used 3 different colors but they all blended in together. I carved the details with a round file in as a spiral in opposite directions. I’m going to get some proper carving chisels when I get paid and probably a box of bandaids. Then maybe I’ll try some new techniques.
Today I made a pen using figured birch and black fabric dye, I’m calling it the “Bond villain pen”. The birch looked really boring and so I decided to try to dye it with black fabric dye. I was very happy with the way it turned out, after I paired it with the satin gold hardware, I thought this looks like it belongs on the desk of someone who it trying to take over the world. Today I made an Amboyna Burl pen it took a few tries the first blank had a void and blew apart on the lathe the second had bad tear out on the ends. This go around I took my time and used thin ca glue to soak the ends and stabilize the blank. Then using a skew I shaped the blank slow and just taking the finest cuts.
I made a stand so I can take better pics of my wands. I used a scrap piece of oak and walnut. I for the posts I first cut the tenons on both ends of the spindle and then I shaped the spindle in as close to a mirror image as I could then drilled a 1/2 inch hole in the middle of the spindle then using a skew I parted the pieces and evened out the notches wit a file and some sandpaper. After a couple quick coats of lacquer it was done. It isn’t the most accurate work I’ve ever done but it looks nice and should make for better pics.
My attempt at making a video. I need to find better software that the IPad version of iMovie. This wand I made with alder wood and dyed with rit dye. I carved a the spiral accent with round files 1/4 inch round bastard for the grip and 3/8 inch round bastard file for the shaft. I used 3 colors of rit dye on it the grip is wine then scarlet, and finally fuchsia. Then I blended it all with a damp shop towel. Finally I finished it with watco spray lacquer.

Out of the Color grain, spectraply, and acrylic, the color grain are my favorites but the are they are really only available from psi. Spectraply has better selection of colors and but the don’t come out as interesting and are a bit harder to get complex shapes and beads. Acrylic however has the largest selection of colors and you don’t have to put finish on them I just wet sand and polish with micro mesh, but turning it has a learning curve at least for me. Turning acrylic I find is about sharp tools, riding the bevel, and patience. You can’t hog of material like you can with wood so I go slow and try to stream ribbons of material. Ok if you have read this far into my rant about turning thanks and feel free to ask any questions.
Just finished up a custom wand, It turned out great. I tried a new method of shaping the transition and the handle first before rounding and thinning the shaft. It worked way better, less wobble and chatter this one was only 11 3/4 inch long so it was not bad. The wood was dead dry and hard I don’t recommend trying to turn wands with green woods, they are to flexible over the 14- 18inches between centers. I use a 4 jaw chuck and live center and do most of the work with a freshly sharpened skew chisel on medium high speed.
Tried out a few new shapes for crochet hooks. my wife likes all but the propeller style one but, the one on the far left is her favorite but some customers that have asked for other more dainty style. Since I’m not exactly a dainty and delicate guy these are my best try.
Working with green wood is alway a risk yet fun. I was planing to make a live edge bowl with this chunk of apple. When I stared it only had 2 tiny cracks the more I turned the more cracks I got I thought I’ll just try and finish it see what happens well that when it just completely failed. I think I’ll be sticking to turning well dried blanks from now on. One last thing I learned is applewood is a very hard wood I believe it’s harder than maple.
