On this day in 1814, a newspaper ad was published declaring a $1000 reward for the capture of pirate Jean Laffite’s brother, Pierre. Pierre and three slaves had mysteriously escaped the parish prison at the Cabildo a few days before. Although the notice ran in “Le Courrier de la Louisiane” for more than a month, Pierre was never captured and the reward remained unclaimed. (Louisiana State Museum #ap000223)
"Living with Hurricanes: Katrina and Beyond" - our exhibit at the Presbytère on Jackson Square - features a powerful artifact from the harrowing days following Hurricane Katrina. Tommie Elton Mabry kept a Katrina diary on the walls of his apartment in the B. W. Cooper Public Housing Complex. Mabry can be seen in this photograph by Thom Neff on the day city officials forced him to evacuate. It was photographer Thom Neff who informed us about the Mabry diary, and when the Cooper buildings were slated for demolition, the Housing Authority of New Orleans granted the Louisiana State Museum permission to remove and take ownership of the diary sections. We're busy as can be working on an incredible, new exhibit for Capitol Park Museum. Wanna sneak peek? 🤓 This is a pair of brown leather high-top lace-up boots worn by New Orleans native Dr. Louis Julian Genella, who was the first American soldier to be injured during World War I. He suffered serious injury while fighting with the British Expeditionary Force in France 100 years ago in July 1917 but recovered fully. These boots are now with a conservator and will be carefully cleaned, softened, and conditioned for display. Louisiana State Museum #11870.61a-b. Stay tuned for more announcements coming soon!
A production crew from “Antiques Roadshow” recently traveled to New Orleans to tape episodes for the 22nd season of their highly popular PBS television series, created by the Boston-based station WGBH. For the introductory segments of these future shows, the crew shot interior and exterior "B-roll" footage at the Louisiana State Museum's Cabildo, Presbytère, and New Orleans Jazz Museum. Georgia-born Howard Finster, who became a preacher while still a teenager, took up painting as an extension of his religious convictions. After settling in Pennville, Georgia, Finster began constructing “Paradise Gardens,” a landscape inspired by his spiritual beliefs. At first, his garden was dedicated to the “inventions of mankind and filled with constructions made of concrete and found objects. In 1976, however, Finster began painting scenes illustrating biblical themes—a pursuit which would occupy him until his death. His work is on display in “Soul of the South: Selections for the Gitter-Yelen Collection” at the New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Old U.S. Mint. But hurry! This exhibit closes August 26! On this day in 1964, the last streetcar on the Canal Street Line made its final run to make way for modernized buses. Rail transportation’s popularity rallied in the 1990s, and plans to reconstruct the line were in the works. Put on your biggest hat, it’s Kentucky Derby time! And Louisiana is proud to have our own derby hero. Beginning in 2007, jockey Calvin Borel won an unprecedented three Kentucky Derbies in a four-year span. Though he retired in March 2016 after 5,146 career wins, Borel returned to sport the following August. Known as “Bo-rail” because of his penchant for riding close to the rail, the jockey is a native of St. Martin’s Parish. In June of this year, Calvin Borel will be officially inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. This Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Louisiana History Museum will host Chief Rufus Davis of the Adai Caddo Nation as he presents a history of one of the most ancient roads in America. The El Camino Real was created more than a thousand years ago by wild bison migrating south from the Great Plains. The Indians of the Adai Indian Nation used the El Camino Real to establish a trade network from Texas to Louisiana. Indian trade routes traveling from village to village existed long before the Spaniards named the El Camino Real Trail while establishing Catholic Indian Mission Churches in the Tejas Country. Spanish and French explorers used this same road to open trade relations between the French and Spanish frontiers from Natchitoches to Mexico during the 17th and 18th centuries. Chief Davis has been Chief of The Adai Caddo Nation since 1989. His passion to move the nation to federal recognition stirred his journey to uncover the rich history of the Adai Caddo Indians–the heart of the Adai Caddo Cultural Center. What he discovered was a saga that chronicles the role of the Adai Caddo Indian people in American history and their involvement in establishing the Texas and Louisiana territories. On this day in 1742, Canadian-born Pierre de Rigaud de Vaudreuil de Cavagnial, Marquis de Vaudreuil, was named the governor of French Louisiana. He held the post for a decade.
