The world needs more ‘I am not made of my of myself alone’ Hannibal Lecter. Give us a Hannibal who has spent his entire public life as a packrat of personality traits and design elements he’s become enamored with. Show us Hannibal’s John Hopkins’ surgical mentor giving FBI witness testimony in a loudly-patterned three-piece suit. Give us the moment Will is sitting in therapy with Bedelia and he finally clocks that Hannibal’s psychiatric presence has been ripped wholesale from his former psychiatrist. Show us Will realizing he has no idea who Hannibal Lecter really is before it clicks that he’s the only man on earth who actually knows who Hannibal Lecter is. (…and then give us a post-fall Hannibal who begins to love flannel shirts and stubble and dogs and rustic living because there is nothing he adores in this life more than Will Graham and there is no higher form of his affection than mimicry)

Also, he looks like he's just found God. Or as if he had heard of what God was before, but now he has been granted a glimpse inside and is now directly looking at him for the very first time, knowing the turbulent path of his devotion has just begun.

It’s been over a decade and I still think about this damn parallel and I’ve just gotta get this headcanon out— In Mizumono, at the time of this phone call, Hannibal suspects Freddie Lounds is alive. He suspects Will has been dishonest about his intentions and that there is some kind of trap involving Jack that might spring in a just a few hours at dinner. He suspects Will has turned on him, but he still has hope that Will is going to pull through.

Then comes the phone call, and Will completely shatters any optimism left in Hannibal that there’s been misunderstanding about the situation.

What’s worse: while Will’s phrasing is coincidental, ‘They know’ is new evidence that one specific individual has broken Hannibal’s confidence—because the only person alive with true knowledge of Hannibal’s phone call to GJH is waiting upstairs for Will to come home so they can all leave together for Europe.

If Will has hidden his deception this well for this long—who’s to say Abigail didn’t also find a way to make contact with the FBI and conspire with Jack Crawford? Because Will throwing Hannibal’s words back at him during such a critical moment is something that only makes logical sense in a world where Will already knows Abigail is still alive. So, for Hannibal, ‘They know’ is not a warning coming from a place of mournful affection from an embattled Will who’s fleeing arrest and trying to save his friend: it’s a taunting confession. ’They know’ isn’t the moment Hannibal decided he was going to punish Will—but it is the moment he decided he had to kill Abigail.
