“Hey, I’m here, okay? You can tell me anything.”
I HAVE CONCERNS HERE
I finally was assigned a story to write an article about an up-and-coming actor. He was charming. He was gorgeous. He was married to an actress, who was also gorgeous. And I interviewed everyone who knew him and they all told me how great he was. Lovely, talented…
I miss Kat. I miss her perspective.
And they could be doing similar with James, but they’re not. We’re simply not seeing what he’s doing in her position.
This show has done a lot of stupid things in s2 re: James, but the flattening of their definition of heroism is one of the most painful. In s1, James was just as heroic for pointing his camera at things the world needed to see as Kara was heroic for flying to the rescue and punching bad guys. In s1, the show took pains to illustrate that heroism could be found anywhere and in anyone, provided a person was willing to stand up for and do what was right and good and just. As a photojournalist, James could shine light on injustice, expose wrongdoing, and give voice and attention to people, issues, and events the city/country/world needed to be informed about, and in s1, the show rightly called that heroic. Having superpowers, martial arts skills, or guns wasn’t the mark of a hero; being a good person with strong convictions that translated to positive actions was.
In s2, however, heroes whose heroism doesn’t involve physical violence are no longer valued. They’re denigrated, even, as when James posits that he can do more good as Guardian than with a camera in his hand and a multimedia empire at his disposal.
And given the current state of the real world–where the existence and impact of strong, principled journalism is of crucial, prominent importance in the ever-increasing struggle to ensure that political powers are held accountable for their crimes, neglects, and abuses–that is a really fucking unfortunate story choice.
Remember when the show called Cat Grant the most powerful person in National City, and the writing made a point to position her in parallel with, in opposition with, and finally in support of Supergirl?
That was the best episode of S1, bar none.
Why they don’t give James (and Kara) that power in S2 is beyond me, because LOOK AT TEEN VOGUE RIGHT NOW. Tell me that putting a person of color in charge of a major publication doesn’t do a world of good if they choose to maximize the influence they do have in swaying public opinion. In a national debate about immigration and refugees! They don’t even have to change the topic to make the metaphor land! This is such an easy ball to knock out of the park, and they have been flubbing it all season long.
I just don’t understand how they lost the thread, just because Calista/Cat is gone. James is still there, and he matters. Jimmy Olsen, with his experience with the Daily Planet and Catco and learning from Lois Lane, Clark Kent and Cat Grant, matters.

The only picture I have of myself as a kid in kindergarten is with a little seersucker and an expression that’s not really a smile, not really a frown, just something. But every time I look at the little girl, I always thought, “Oh, it’s a cute outfit, but she was always hungry, she was always shy, she was always kinda in the background, but inside she had big dreams bursting.” And the only thing I could think about is that saying: “What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls a butterfly.”
Congrats to Viola Davis for receiving her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!
