   〢▸ She was quiet with her intense speculation, a curious look lingering on her face as she took the time to carefully study all the desserts lined up on the table. While worrying about such a small thing might have been silly to others, Sera still felt the flutter of nerves deep inside her stomach. Tapping her lips in thought, a slight frown fell on her features. 

   ❝T-There’s so many to choose from. I- I can’t possibly decide on one… What if I pick the wrong one? If I don’t like it, I’d be wasteful…❞

     “Why don’t you try the cake?” Lenalee suggested from the girl’s right, nodding her head towards the dessert in question. The refreshments table was a place of sanctuary off to the side, away from the large crowds gathered more towards the middle. A good place to catch a breath, or to grab a snack, which was her primary objective. “It’s chocolate, and very tasty!”

       “Ah, your tie -” Was just a little crooked. Her smile remained nonetheless as she stepped in to straighten it, gently tugging at Lavi’s shirt until not a hair - or wrinkle, in this case - was out of place. Admittedly, she was more than a little out of her element in surroundings like this, but she was having fun all the same. “It’s pretty, isn’t it?” Lenalee murmured once satisfied, pointing to the ceiling above them. It almost looked alive.

“I’m glad we came!” Wouldn’t it have been a shame to miss out on this? The night had just barely started, sure, but she was positive that it would be one to remember.

happy birthday.

       ❝ I didn’t know it was so hard to go shopping with ya, Allen. ❞

       It’s a joke, though, because Lavi didn’t really want to go shopping. The plan was simply to take Allen out for an hour maybe, and the red haired had used the excuse that they had to go buy suits for the ball that approached. It was the perfect excuse, was it not? Even though his friend did have a sharp eye ( or perhaps they just have been friends for time enough ) for Lavi’s horrible lies and just the fact he had a really poor acting sometimes, the important fact was that he did manage to be out for time enough until Lenalee ( though Mukuro’s phone ) message him to come back.

       And he did, on December 25th – Allen Walker’s birthday.

       Despite the boy’s mood being over the top, loud & smiling and joking twice more than the usual, especially by the time they approached home, he still did as planned. And by the time they got home, well – he just simply pushed Allen in to the surprise beyond the door.

          This day was of the utmost importance. Not because of the holiday, though that made the occasion all the more festive. Decorations, gifts...there was so much to get done in an hour, and Lenalee was more than grateful for Miranda and Mukuro being present - the more, the merrier! Once the last of the decorations had been hung, she gave Lavi the all clear (murmuring words of thanks to the other for the use of her phone), and stood back to admire everyone’s handiwork. 

A turning doorknob signaled the pair’s return soon after, her already bright smile growing even wider at the sight of her dear friend. 

“Surprise! Happy Birthday, Allen!”

                 ➤ Stores had suddenly grown more and more embellished with elaborate clothing. Granted, she hadn’t been in the city for an abundance of time, but the change had become rather obvious- most likely due to the upcoming ball. While she had managed to abstain from browsing, a store that replicated the clothing that she was more familiar with had caught her eye. Naoto hadn’t wished to conform, but merely browsing wasn’t a sign of assimilation, right?

                       Slowly, she wrapped her fingers around the site of a long, black dress. However, a gentle tug in the opposite direction had caught her attention- almost as though it was a sign to step away from the establishment in general. ❝I- sorry, I didn’t mean to pull this dress…❞ Clearly, she was talented at lying.  

                       ❝Are you interested in purchasing it? It would look nice on you…!❞

                Shopping had always been one of the things she never got much time to do back home - in between traveling and work, there wasn't a lot of leisure time to spare. Now that she was here, however, it couldn't hurt to take a look every now and then - especially with the ball looming in the extremely near future.

She had already been at it for an hour or so, plucking dresses from their racks and briefly entertaining the idea of wearing each of them, before putting them back in their place. One black dress in particular managed to catch her eye, and almost automatically, she reached out to grab it - only to quickly release her hold when she felt someone else doing the same.  “Oh no, I wasn’t - I was just looking!”

 A pause, followed by a smile. “You should go try it on! I’m sure it would look just as nice on you.”

❖ “Are you interested in that outfit in the window? Do you have no money?” That was the impression Nasse was getting, at any rate. “Why don’t you just take it then? It’s not like they’re going to find you in this city anyways!”

While it was true that she didn’t have a dime to her name since arriving in the city, the thought of stealing something had never crossed her mind. Nervous laughter. She was kidding, right? “I am...not in the practice of taking things that don’t belong to me, it isn’t right. Besides, I was just looking, really.”

There’s a feeling of comfort that washes over her upon spotting something familiar in a sea of all that is not; a feeling of solid ground being placed under her feet once more. ‘Familiar’ stood there just the same as Lenalee remembers him - not a hair out of place. He has a name, but it’s one that she cannot bring herself to say immediately, lest a flood of where have you beens and what are you doing heres escape along with it. So instead she settles for something much less heavy, approaching him as casually as she would any other day.

“You know, I never really took you for the dancing type.” A gesture towards the poster he seemed to be lingering at. One of many plastered around, sure, but they did their job: there probably wasn’t a soul in the city that hadn’t taken notice of them by now.

She holds out a hand, as if to stop the other’s potentially fatal actions by mere willpower alone. “Those are extremely dangerous! They could kill you.”
