Sappy Hannibal Post

This is sappy and unimportant but

When I caught Hannibal live for the first time, it was season 1 episode 1. I had not watched live television in YEARS. Unless it was a hockey game, I never even had the television on. A New York Rangers event had just ended and I didn’t turn the television off right away. It was the day before my birthday and I was excited so I stayed up on the computer with channel four still on. For some reason, it caught my attention and I didn’t even realize I had watched an entire episode and couldn’t wait to see more.

As an avid book reader and writer, it was everything I could have wanted to see on my television. FINALLY something to catch my interest. From there, slowly more people began to watch and I began to meet those that would one day be part of the fannibals. Never having been invested in a show or part of a fandom before, this was all new to me and I had no idea what I was in for.

I was very uninspired in life prior to this… experience that Hannibal has been. I didn’t really get excited for things, and my interests were very few and far between. It opened my eyes to so much more than I ever realized before. My mind expanded beyond my town on Long Island and began to take notice of other places and people around the world. I rediscovered my love for reading and writing again, and realized that it didn’t really matter what anyone else thought because I had finally found something that I could look forward to. 

Mads Mikkelsen became a beacon of light for me, the man just shines. His zest for life, talent, kindness, and charm really captured me. He inspired me to be a happier person, since for a long time I didn’t even realize I was lacking it. Being uninspired takes away so much color from the world, and it was because of him and the people involved with this show that I opened my eyes again. Meeting him and realizing he was exactly what I needed him to be put just a sliver of my hope back into humanity. Then I got to meet Hugh Dancy and Bryan Fuller, who sealed the deal that no matter who you are, you can be nice to people. And you should be.

This will sound silly to anyone who doesn’t know the feeling that I’m talking about, and of course there is always more to the story, but this is the part of my story that matters to me. I’m so thankful for the journey that Hannibal has taken me on, and the things that it has taught me, and the people that I have met because of it. I’ve gotten to see some of the best and worst of people because of it, and I’ve learned from it every step of the way.

I know this is possibly not the end of the show, and I certainly hope it’s not. But I needed to publicly acknowledge what has happened here, and why it’s so important. No, Hannibal wasn’t the best show on television and if it never gets picked up again, it will go away just like every show that got canceled before it. I won’t forget it though, and I’ll carry that feeling always.
