Ty Lee stays quiet, which is unusual. Normally she’s pointing out how pretty the moon looks by now, or gossiping about their classmates, or suggesting they stargaze. But instead, she has fixed her gaze to the horizon, brow furrowed. Mai wants to smooth it out.
After what feels like an eternity, Ty Lee speaks, keeping her eyes on the mountains that fade into nothingness far, far away. Her voice is a birdsong above the rustling of leaves below.
“I’m leaving.”
Oh.

in honor of @maileeweek this is my [late] short entry for day 2: hair (and kinda day 3: neurodivergence)
When Mai walks into her and Ty Lee’s shared apartment, she stops in her tracks. She blinks once, twice at the scene in front of her before heaving a sigh and setting to straightening up the space. Starting in the living room, she focuses on one category at a time.
She picks up the multitude of heels and boots that seem to be sorted in a weird semicircle, carrying them back to their room. As she passes the bathroom, she can hear Ty Lee trying to hold in a scream as she scrambles through what must be a makeup bag.
Mai winces in sympathy, resisting the urge to step in too soon. She has a task to complete before she can change tasks without feeling anxious, and so she is determined to finish it. She puts the shoes in their storage sleeves before returning to the living room, grabbing the haphazardly discarded outfits and jewelry neatly before carrying them to the room and going through the same careful storage of them as she did with the shoes.
After she’s done a final sweep of their living room, grabbed a random shirt off the dining room table and folded it neatly in its drawer, and taken three deep breaths Mai knocks three times on the door. “Ty Lee?” She’s met with silence. Not even the sound of her makeup drawers opening and closing can be heard now. “Sweetheart, can I come in?”
Rather than a verbal response, the door is pulled open, left cracked for Mai to enter.
When she does, she looks at Ty Lee through the mirror, a worried and soft smile taking over her face. Her fiancée is wearing a lavender-colored floor-length dress with spaghetti straps and a deep v-neck cut. Where the top is simple, the bottom is topped with light purple lace, and littered with deep purple flowers scattering themselves along the bottom. She’s done her makeup to match, and Mai has to stop for a moment to take her in. She’s beautiful, and sometimes Mai can’t believe someone like Ty Lee was ever willing to give her the time of day.
“Hey, gorgeous.” Ty Lee finally looks at her, the anxiety in her eyes giving way to surprise then sheepishness. She smiles at Mai in the mirror’s reflection. Mai walks up to her, pressing a light kiss to the crown of her head. “You excited for tonight? It’s not everyday you get invited to be on the board of Japan’s Gymnastic Association.” She presses another kiss to Ty Lee’s head, smiling at the blush that’s creeping up the other girl’s neck. “I’m so proud of you, love.”
For a moment Ty Lee doesn’t reply, but when she does it tugs at Mai’s heart. “What if I mess up?” She sounds so small, so unsure of herself, and Mai hates it. Hates the criticism she’s seen Ty Lee get from reaching such a huge milestone so quickly. Ty Lee’s been in competitive gymnastics since she was three, and became the country’s youngest balance beam world champion at sixteen. By the time she was twenty-three, she had opened her own gym and trained girls who had gotten plenty first-placements of their own. “What if they laugh at me?”
“Then they don’t deserve to have you and I’ll drag their name through the mud so badly that they’ll have to disband and form a new organizaton.” That made Ty Lee giggle, the smile Mai was hoping for now trying harder to take over her face. “That’s much better. You are going to be the best board member they’ve ever seen, and when you’re able to balance that and get your girls first place in World’s, they’ll have no choice but to respect you then. You’re the best damn gymnast Japan—no, they world has ever seen, and I won’t let anyone make you believe otherwise.
“Now,” Mai says, with a mock-serious tone. “Give me a brush, and I’ll fix your hair for you. Then I’ll get changed and we can call a car.” Ty Lee complies easily, grabbing her brush off the counter and turning to hand it to Mai. She presses a brief kiss to Mai’s cheek before turning around and beaming at her in the mirror. They stand in silence as Mai works her fiancée’s hair into an intricate braided style that flows down her back. When she’s done, she places another quick kiss to Ty Lee’s hair, careful not to mess up the work she’s done.
When she moves to exit the bathroom, Ty Lee catches her hand before turning to look at Mai in the eyes rather than the mirror. “Thank you,” she whispers with a small smile. Mai can’t help but to return it.
“You’re more than welcome, sweetheart.” When Ty Lee tilts her head up to press a kiss to Mai’s lips, she can still feel her smiling.
