SCHITT’S CREEK - series wrap on Annie Murphy
last table read
“Very young children are not afraid to express what they feel. They are so loving that if they perceive love, they melt into love. They are not afraid to love at all. That is the description of a normal human being. As children we are not afraid of the future or ashamed of the past. Our normal human tendency is to enjoy life, to play, to explore, to be happy, and to love.”
— Don Miguel Ruiz , The Four Agreements

not to sound like a golden retriever on main but the feeling when someone praises me for something i did? indescribable
Ah, life.
(What follows is a very, very selfish take on a horrific state of global affairs. You have been warned.)
I gave birth six weeks ago, and the world today is unrecognisable from the way it was when my son came into the world. I feel broken because of it. I feel robbed.
All I can think about is how badly I want to go back to that first week in the hospital, where everything was safe and warm, and the nurses could cuddle my baby, and the months in front of me were filled with lovely, lovely potential.
This is not how starting a family was supposed to be. My parents were supposed to be able to visit every week, to shower their first grandchild with hugs and kisses, to share this magical time. My husband was supposed to be around to watch his son grow, not deployed to the frontlines of a pandemic and living in an isolation block. My grandma was supposed to take the two hour bus to visit us for lunch every other week, as she has for the last ten years, only now there would be another tiny person at the table. I was supposed to have coffee and play dates with my friends and their kids, to go for long leisurely walks and chat to strangers about how yes, my baby is extremely adorable, thank you for noticing.
I feel robbed.
LOVE being shamed for not breastfeeding my baby! LOVE to feel like decisions I make surrounding my own body are now up for public debate! LOVE the implication that I’m somehow a bad mother because of a choice that – TRUST ME – was best for my family! LOVE IT!!!
person: “I’m a feminist”
the same person: “upon having a baby, every woman should be legally obligated to sacrifice their body for that baby, regardless of potential implications for her own health”
