This is a quick shot I have just taken on my phone of my developed 5 x 4 transparency. I am a little unhappy that i just missed out on getting the line in the middle straight, after the countless times I checked it; however i am absolutely delighted with the exposure!

Format Photography Festival, Derby - Evidence

This year the Format Photography Festival was held in Derby. This year’s theme was ‘Evidence’. I had never been to, or even heard of anything like this before, but I was still excited to go. We were given a list and a map of all the venues displaying work. There were so many exhibitions all over the city so we tried to cram in as many as possible in the one day we had. I would have loved to have been able to spend a few days down there enjoying even more of it, taking more time to appreciate it all.

My favourite parts of the festival were the display of “The Landscape of Murder” by Antonio Olmos in the University of Derby and “The Iceberg” by Giorgio di Noto. “The Iceberg” was quite an interactive part of the festival. Images were printed very small into a wall and you could shine a torch on to look at them. On the other side of the torch was an ultraviolet light. If you scanned this over the wall more images would appear. I thought this was an extremely unique way to show photographs and a very clever play on the word ‘evidence’ as it is almost like you have to find it.

Adam Murray - Preston is my Paris

Another photographer came into give us a talk about his work. This talk was about “Preston is my Paris” founded in 2009 by Adam Murray and Robert Parkinson. The work started off shooting 35 mm black and white and creating them as a zine that was handed out in Preston.  They created many zines that became very successful.

Visiting Speaker - Simon Roberts

English photographer Simon Roberts came in to give us a talk about his career and show us some of his work. The artists started out taking shots for his local newspaper and has now created and sold several photobooks.

Each of his books have an illustrated cover which I find quite interesting, and all seem to have a consistent blue tone to the covers.

In 2004 Roberts decided to travel to Russia for a year photographing the landscapes and the people creating his book “Motherland” which was published in 2007. His inspiration for this work was August Sander and his portraits of Germans and the Nazi’s.

His next book was published in 2009. Titled, “We English”, the book visually explores the English landscapes that have previously been represented as paintings.

“The Election Project”. In 2010, he was commissioned to be the official photographer of the election campaigns. On large format he shot this book from on top of his camper van so had a high view point of the surroundings / landscapes and the things happening around him.

His most recent book, “Pierdom” published in 2013 has to be my favourite. This is a collection of again, large format photographs, of the piers around the UK.  I find it to be very nostalgic, since a child I have always had a love for the sea side so I find myself naturally attracted to the book.

I very much enjoyed the talk by Simon Roberts and utterly intrigued by his work.

Behind the Curtain, Tom Arder - The White Cloth Gallery

At our visit to The White Cloth Gallery in Leeds, we saw the work of Yorkshire based photographer, Tom Arber. The photographs on display were his ‘Behind the Curtain’ series. He spent a week behind the scenes with Opera North while the company prepared for the La Traviata performance. His detailed images give show otherwise unseen moments on and off stage, in rehearsals and dressing rooms.

The work was spread over two rooms, one displaying smaller prints across the walls, a mixture of black and white and colour. This was how the room was divided – colour shots and black and white shots. The second room was a bit bigger than the first and in there hug his largely printed, more extravagant and bolder pieces from the set. The images were all displayed hanging down against the wall from the ceiling and accompanying them in the second room were little sets of binoculars hanging down for people to look at the work.

The White Cloth Gallery was also an enjoyable place to be, again this had a small café / restaurant upon entering the venue.

Lorentz Gullachsen

The SUN Awards 26 - The Gallery at the Monroe House

The ‘SUN Awards 26’ (Shot Up North) was exhibited at The Gallery at Monroe House from November 2014 to January 2015. The awards is a not for profit event for photographers who create work with purchase or commission. Judging is done anonymously by an independent panel and is open to all professional photographers in the northern UK regions.

I enjoyed this exhibition, the photographs were pleasing to look at with many strong aesthetic features. The staff were lovely and helpful, explaining how the awards work and other things that go on in the gallery. It was a pleasant space to spend time in. To one side there was a small shop selling photography and art books as well as other gifts. At the other, was a little café that displayed some of the work and you walked through this to get into the rest of the gallery space to where the exhibition continued. The gallery had a lovely relaxed atmosphere, however I do think the work was printed quite small. This could be because there was a lot of it and it was a small space. Although I do think the owners made the most of the space, the images were presented evenly spaced out.

FUSE Art Space, Bradford. 

We visited another gallery in Bradford called FUSE. Unlike Impressions, this gallery was very small. The theme of the work displayed at the time was Syrian War art. It was called “Parallel Republic: The Art of Civil Disobedience” There was a variety of art work, other than photography, including paintings, graphic design, drawing and film, all by different artists.

The gallery contained some quite distressing pieces of art such as torn down buildings, a woman giving birth to weaponry, and a severed head on top of a sewing machine that was being sewn into military uniform. Due to the graphic nature of the work, they were quite uncomfortable to look at, but communicated strong messages about Syrian War.
