finally did some painting on some of those shirts i dyed. a lot of the dye came out in the wash.. more than i would have liked, honestly. i'm still debating if i want to do another layer of dyeing to get some darker shades in there. i might just leave it though. the fabric for the backs is pretty light, so i think it would work either way... i kind of like that ethereal , dreamy quality of the washed out colors.

marbled some fabric for the first time today! these were my favorites. the top one was the last piece. i learned a lot and can't wait to try it again! gonna do some research on techniques and buy some more paint...

did some dyeing today! i put some salt on the last two to get the darker brown speckles. still thinking of what to do next with these. i'm thinking about turning it into a mold pattern. add some fuzz and spores.

possible idea for my next project. i really want to learn how to marbleize fabric. this project would be perfect for figuring it out too because all of the pattern pieces will be pretty small. i'll probably be able to make five or six 18" square panels. the back bodice is just thin straps and the front has big open areas on the shoulders so it won't require too much fabric. the shorts are flared with a one inch slit up the side for that sporty look. ideally this will be linen or light-weight cotton. we'll see what's easiest to work with for the marbleizing.

texture!!! i've been thinking lately about how i can get more tactile with my work. i think beading and embroidery are going to come to the fore this year. i love that detail work. also, the contrast of heavy texture and crepe-thin material appeals to me. my last project dealt with opacity and transparency, but i'm definitely going to heighten that contrast next time with some some heavier embroidery and/or beadwork.

the new valentino collection seems reminiscent of the work of étienne léopold trouvelot, albeit in a folk art, seventies style. interesting parallels between the embroidered planets and trouvelot's illustrations of mars and jupiter, especially.
