We are a long way from a mere illustration of Plato's philosophy, and a long way from the natural world about us; even a long way from a straightforward account of a beautiful woman. What Botticelli has done is to abstract from his observations of the living world a language of rhythmic patterns - like the fluttering of garments or hair, or the movement of waves; and it is this most delicate sensitivity to pattern which enables him, in so much of his work, to choreograph a story, tell it in the form of a ballet.
