Seeing @laurits-is-loki post about the last episode of Ragnarok made me realise once again how mad i am about that bullshit ending. Turned me off the whole show, tbh.

How very dare you spent the whole first season with people trying to gaslight Magne into believing he's only hallucinating (and getting the viewer rightfully angry on his account) and then turn around in the last episode and go "muahaha, it was all in his head. He just needed to grow the fuck up!" -.- you can fuck all the way off pursued by a bear.

I know right? It felt like such a letdown ending and honestly I would've ended the show at episode 5. The whole of episode 6 was gruelling to get through, I'm lowkey glad I didn't watch the season when it aired because I would've been PISSED instead of just moderately disappointed

So he was just a maladaptative daydreamer going through active psychosis this entire time. Alright.

I really do hate when a narrative takes the cheap, reductionist approach of "he was in a comma and hallucinated the entire thing woooooaaaah!!!" and expect you to go omg that's crazy! you know like no one ever has. No one has ever reacted that way to this cliché. Because no one likes it.

That was not cathartic. That was the opposite of.

Because there has been absolutely no build-up towards this point. It's an incredibly reductive and derivative way of closing off a show whose original plot you dropped who knows when or why.

There is no character development whatsoever that clues the spectator in that this is a coming of age type of show. Your MC has a purpose. Somehow along the way during season 2 he changes course and takes a different perspective on how to do things.

Then during season 3 he's an asshole for a while, has a reality check and fixes his entire personality within five minutes, only for you to drop the entire narrative line and say WELL NEWSFLASH! It was all a big, CHILDISH fantasy. NOTHING HAPPENED. Ok then if you don't care about the world you built, why should we. The writing of the last episode basically says "nothing we have told you matter, so you can forget this show because we sure as hell will". There is no message to convey. You were a lonely, delusional boy that lived in a fantasy world inside your head, and now you're an adult so you have suddenly developed a cure towards your dissociation. Time to move on to live on the real world, bucko.

The throwing of the comics did feel a little bit like the director throwing out the audience's expectations. Maybe it's because in my personal line of work I have to deal with belief, culture, tradition and mythology a lot but it did feel, well, cheap, to create a bunch of characters based on actual mythological figures that have had a huge impact on history and culture to do something and then just discard them like "just the marvel character" or something. You would not do that with a character from a currently popular religious practice but it does seem paganism suffers from this a lot (lol)

Anyway and back to the narrative timeline:

It really does feel like that ending was coming out of nowhere. There is absolutely no telling what the ending is going to be because, once again, the show did start in a very different direction. It seems to me the creator had a clear view that went muddled along the way, probably because of demands from the "higher ups". We know Netflix is not exactly a "quality" show producer. It makes mass entertainment with no depth or wider meaning, and this pretty much is another example of that.

The characters have felt one dimensional for a while, and the writing was atrocious during the last season. There has been nothing going on for a while and I'm honestly a little glad I left this season unwatched back when I actually did care about this show lol

You should've just ended it at episode 5 and be done with it. Save us all the disappointment of you trying to tear the bandaid off to somehow give us a "this is what maturing is" approach and end up going "ash ketchum is in a hospital bed dreaming that his pet rat has superpowers" look.

The ragnarok was beautifully choreographed though, and probably the only one good thing to come out of last season besides laurits' big, sad beautiful eyes.

oh and btw making a character's entire personality having found love and not being "so angry at the world" just because he has found "himself" in his queerness is not the woke, cool look you think it is.

Also this might just be me but that does set a weird and iffy precedent towards the way you treat your already disabled character. Now he's not just dislexic but also schizophrenic? Or at the very least a maladaptative daydreamer, like I mentioned. And you do not treat this mental health issue with the seriousness it deserves. I know we can't all be The Woker and I am not at all a super woke person or anything but in the current times you should at the very least be conscious of what you are doing and the sensitive subject matters you treat when you are writing a show and you are including mental health stuff on it. Just saying.

I don't really have the vocabulary to express it, it just feels really odd and bothersome how they treated the whole "fantasy world in your head" thing. I feel like other shows do that so much better, is all.

One resource I think they made great use of during season 1 and then began underutilising/misusing is the radio presenter. His lines were so razor sharp for the audience to realise just how dire the situation is and how little people care about taking good care the world they live in. And then that wit just completely goes away the moment the plot takes a turn towards "hurr durr battle battle we must fight" like yeah you do but WHAT are you fighting for at this point exactly
