There is literally no circumstance where I support age verification to access a website. As I've said before I'm very much the "there's nuance here" person on almost everything but on this issue there's no nuance for me, it's awful and horrible in and of itself and it also sets an awful and horrible precedent

I do not give a shit if the people checking the box are actually adults, and oppose any effort to confirm that they are.

so the vast majority of things like elevator keys and keys for construction equipment are identical across all models they're used for. potentially everything the company makes, even. if you have a key that works on one Caterpillar excavator, chances are that key works on every other piece of Caterpillar equipment. in some cases, these things are little more than a literal skeleton key.

similarly, if you have a fence around your backyard, chances are the gate for it uses little more than a simple latch. no meaningful lock involved.

that's because the point of these things isn't so much to ensure no one can get in, but to confirm that anyone who does hasn't done it accidentally. turning the key to power up a crane is essentially you affirmatively declaring responsibility and intention to your actions.

that's all that the "click to confirm you're an adult" thing is supposed to be, and honestly, i'm gonna say that making it anything more than that is psychologically damaging to society. it makes whatever's locked behind that gate into something even scarier than it otherwise would be. it exacerbates paranoia. it does all the things that have led to real-world neighbours being suspicious of each other, and to neighbourhoods being utterly devoid of activity and actual community.
