The Art of Being Yourself
Happy Valentine’s Day!
The art of being yourself, that’s the ultimate lesson New York has taught me. A. Because everyone else literally does not care and B. because everyone else literally does not care. For some reason in this flurry of high activity, everyone else is chasing their dreams, hyper focused or honed in on their goals, problems or insecurities and they have no time or energy left over to be false, to put on niceties. Even worse, when you do it, they look at you like what the fuck is wrong with her?
That’s the thing about interactions here. Being fake is the kiss of death because no one who really matters, from your neighbor to your boss will respect the fake shit. Don’t say how you feel? That’s on you schmuck. You desesrve to get got. It seems cruel, but at the end of the day it’s freeing. You can let go of the fake front and really relax into your whole being. Which is weird at first; you’re like, how do I feel? Am I angry? You’ve suppressed your feelings for so long, you don’t really know what the fuck going on anymore. But let yourself go, eventually all those feelings come back so when some idiot squeezes himself between the tiny space by the train door where you and your backpack were standing you can give him the ice stare and tell him you were standing there. The next time you’re doing the friendly benefits dance with a 6’1 200 pound of sexy jabon, you can tell his ass straight up if you’re wearing the durag don’t even come cause I’m an intellectual bitch from the suburbs who looks down on people ordering moscato with their first course dis tew much. It’s too early in the relationship for you to be letting it all out like this. Best of all, you can say it and mean it, and let the whole thing go because there’s now something new to take up all your attention. That’s the beauty of New York. You don’t have to fake it anymore. You can be yourself and being yourself lets you focus in on the next step which is perfecting your hustle, which is in a sense...faking it but that’s a whole nother blog post tbh.
