Imagine if Will had never been in love with Mike, and Mike (as the narrator) just made it all up because he was the one who was in love but was afraid to say it?

Will never said "I love you" to Mike. Mike simply interpreted everything to his own advantage, but after Will coming out and the absence of a declaration of love for him personally after that, he realized that Will was not in love in him.
