Why is it that I am still so utterly bored?

"Right," Valerie rolled her eyes at him. "Why don’t you go bully those first years too while you’re at it, bad guy?" She laughed. It’s been a while since she last played Quidditch with another person, and her whole body’s been itching to play for a week now. Although she wished her practice partner would be someone else, she can’t back down now. Wait a second, Valerie though. "Hey, why don’t we invite Lyra to practice with us?" She smiled but quickly turned it into a smirk before Scorpius could see it. "We’re going to need one more person anyway if we want to make actual progress."

She flipped her hair in the hopes of him not seeing her slightly flushed face. It wasn’t a secret how Scorpius adored his little sister, and Valerie did not want to be alone with Scorpius at all, so this plan should be perfect. “I know she’s not even in the same house as us, but we’re just going to practice, so whatever.”

Scorpius gave her a nod and a bit of a mocking smirk. "I probably should, but there are enough people who do that and I shouldn't be doing what the myriad of cruel people do. I should think of something more evil." The fact that he was a Malfoy and his blood could more than maintain his evil tendencies, should there be any, was a fleeting thought that Scorpius tried not to fixate on. This was precisely why he usually tried to be nicer, despite people's claims that he was basically putty in everybody's hands.

At the mention of Lyra, Scorpius's sarcastic attitude was still there, so his first response was, "You want us to use my little sister as a bludger punching bag?" Then, he took a moment to contemplate the suggestion. Indeed, Quidditch was one of the things Scorpius was certain his little sister enjoyed and opted to improve in, and that offering to have her join him to practice could be considered as an admirable gesture. He just wasn't sure how comfortable Lyra would be with Valerie, whom she barely knew, present, and things still quite shaky between Lyra and Scorpius.

Against All Odds || Lyra and Scorpius

Was he possibly offering her his cauldron? Lyra knew that Scorpius had somewhat of a penchant for potions - which meant that he was fiercely choosy about the various items that he brewed with. She was sure that the sixth years were working on equally, if not more, challenging potions in class, and the fact that he was giving her his own precious cauldron, in possible hopes that she would forgive her, put an immense weight on her body. Charming the cauldron to be hardier was difficult magic in itself, and Lyra, with her own mediocre charms skills, would not have been able to do it herself. Her chest felt cumbersome and tired, as if someone had soaked her heart in water and forgot to wring it out. Was that possibly…guilt, that she was currently feeling? Guilt for assuming that her brother didn’t care, when in reality he did? And I’ve been so cold and nasty to him, she thought heavily.

But no, she would not forgive him. Forgiving was too much. Forgiving meant admitting her wrongs, something Lyra knew, when her excuses were stripped bare from her perceptions, she didn’t want to do. But perhaps, she could be a bit more… civil, with him. To acknowledge his presence, instead of ignoring his attempts to make peace. Lyra didn’t know if she was ready to make progress with his plan, but she was willing to pull back her boundaries, and let him into a small part of her life.

Withdrawing from her contemplation, she looked up at Scorpius, whose face was unreadable, like always. Pulling the cauldron over to her side of the desk, she rubbed her pointer finger along the smooth and cool sides.

"Thank you," she muttered, her voice barely above a whisper. And then, almost as if her face had acted by its own will, she smiled. It was a small and almost indistinguishable from behind her long hair, but it was there all the same.

Scorpius was fixated on Lyra as he waited for her to say anything. He wanted to analyse her reaction, but he could hardly tell what she was been thinking about. He just hoped that this was the right gesture, that it didn't seem too silly or pointless. He realised that Lyra felt as though people noticed and celebrated his accomplishments more than they did hers. Therefore, he thought that if he could help her reach the highest of her potential and accomplish things he has or even some more, she would understand that he never meant to seize the attention away from her on purpose; that this feud and her feeling as though she was an outcast was hardly a thing he would opt for.

When Lyra thanked him in a barely audible murmur, and no apparent change in her facial expression, Scorpius almost thought it was all in his head. But no, as he imagined doing this, over and over again, during the past few days, he never actually thought she would accept his little peace offering. So this had to be real. He sighed in relief and then said, "And you do realise that you're ever stuck with anything you can come to me for help, no? Unless it's Charms. Or Transfiguration."

Against All Odds || Lyra and Scorpius

It was clear that he wanted to stay and talk about something, though Lyra didn’t know possibly know what or why. She thought that she had established her enmity pretty clearly already with her brother in her last conversation - one that she had stormed right out of. But what did he care? He had his friends, his family, his general popularity with the Hogwarts student and staff. Lyra had none of those things. She couldn’t tell if anyone was her friend, and the nearest thing she called a family, which consisted of her paternal grandparents, was miles away in a little seaside cottage. Though the professors liked her, it was only because she was the very few that actually came well-prepared to every class, and her peers didn’t like her, once they learned that she was nothing like her easygoing brother.

"I’m fine," she managed to spit out, despite her rising anger and annoyance with the whole situation. She was too tired and stressed to be fully angry right now, and hoped that he would leave soon so she could resume swimming in her own thoughts.

Suddenly the black cauldron on the desk caught her eye. She had seen it when he walked in so authoritatively, but it didn’t strike her as odd until now. Hardly anyone carried their cauldron around, especially into an empty old classroom. She couldn’t see if anything was in it, but she bet there was, as it would be quite ridiculous if he just brought in an empty cauldron to show her.

The curiosity got the better of her. “What’s that?” She took care not to sound too interested, as it would risk giving into her brother. She pointed at the cauldron with a pale finger, and plastered an expression of boredom onto her face.

Lyra's apathetic --no, borderline hostile-- tone, the fact that she wasn't even turning to look at him as she spoke daunted Scorpius a little. He bit his lip down and took a deep breath in. He liked to believe that he was hardly scared of anything and that very little could fluster him up. But that's precisely what this entire dilemma with Lyra did to him. He just hoped that beneath that rigid, icy facade, even a small part of her wanted to make peace with him or that believed that a part of him could genuinely care about her.

When she seemed to take notice of his cauldron, Scorpius felt a little bit better. He didn't have to try and make small talk when she clearly wanted him out of there; he could go straight into what he was there for. Then small talk would happen on its own.

"Erm... the cauldron? Well, you see, I was talking to one of the fifth years I know a couple of days ago and she mentioned you were going to start working on the draught of peace. It's probably the hardest potion you'll have to deal with all year... I melted a cauldron trying to do it, and I was one of those with the most scarce of losses. And the next few potions would be a bit challenging as well..." That's when Scorpius realised he was sort of rambling and paused for a moment to gather his thoughts.. "I modified this cauldron back when I was in fifth year. It takes more time to melt than would your regular cauldron, and if things explode it won't puff smoke out all over the place or spew out its contents all over you if it over-boils. And a several other perks you should discover as you go along. I don't think you're allowed to use it in exams, but it's very good for practice and you need a lot of that this year."

Why is it that I am still so utterly bored?

Valerie has been feeling incredibly uneasy ever since she last talked with Scorpius. Sure, he’s a Slytherin and a bloody Malfoy for Merlin’s sake,but Valerie has a feeling if Scorpius would be resorted again, he would definitely be sorted into Gryffindor with the way he acts so chivalrous and polite and charming yet in an innocent way and annoying yet righteous and just… ugh. “This is mad," Valerie said out loud. "Maybe I’m mad." She glared at the other students in the common room who stopped what they were doing to glance at her. "What? Sod off," She snarled at them.

Scorpius appeared soon after with his Quidditch gear in check. Valerie could tell he was a little more than excited to practice. She tried her best to hide her growing smile. “No, please, just let me do all the beating. You just throw me the bludgers and do your thing, yeah?” Valerie grabbed her bag full of Quidditch equipment and mildly shoved Scorpius’ shoulder as she walked pass him. “Let’s go, slowpoke!”

When Valerie gave him a prod to move forward, Scorpius complained half-heartedly, "Hey! Save the roughness for the bludgers!" He tucked his broom under his arm, following Valerie with hurried steps. He tried to buckle his helmet, fiddling with its strap till he got it right, adjusting it to sit snugly around his head.

"I can just throw up the two bludgers, let them follow you around and sit and watch you struggle --if you don't want me to help with the beating, I mean." Scorpius sported a bit of smirk. His biggest problem with bludgers was when they were playing against Gryffindor since Lyra's been on the team. Every now and then, he'd glance in her direction to check that she hadn't been hurt, hoping their beaters were doing their job properly. But other than that, Scorpius believed that the beater's role was the most entertaining, and this was why he was excited to be given a shot at playing with a bat with Valerie.

Don’t take too long. I’ve already got my things ready in the common room.

Scorpius hurried off to his dorm and dove into his trunk, trying to find his helmet. He hadn't needed it since he's come to Hogwarts so he never brought it out. But he was quite excited he was getting the chance to get into his gear and do anything that remotely resembles his role at the goal rings. Once he found his helmet, he dusted it off and sloppily put it on his head. He dragged out his broom from under the bed and trudged off to the common room to meet up with Valerie.

"Alright, I'm all ready. Let's go beat things up." Though mostly composed a composed person, Scorpius wasn't trying to contain his evident excitement. After months of only flying, doing something that actually counted as Quidditch was rejuvenating.

Night Wanderings II Roxanne and Scorpius

"Well, it really depends on what genre you would like to read.. do you have a personal preference?" Roxanne questioned, lightly tracing shapes on the arms that wrapped themselves around her waist, "As far as Gatsby goes though.. it is by far one of the best Muggle books I have read. It is my grandfather’s favourite.. and you know how he is with all things Muggle-related." She mused, her lips meeting his for a moment before a smile crept slowly across her face.

"I hope she’s okay with it.. I just want her to like me, you know? After all, she is your sister." Roxanne admitted quietly, entwining their fingers and giving his hand a light squeeze. In fact, it was important to Roxanne that all of his family like her… She might no longer be close to her own family, but it did not mean that she did not want Scorpius’ to disapprove of their son’s choice of girlfriend, "Be sure to check with your parents too… Just to make sure I am not imposing or anything. I’d really love to be able to spend Christmas with you."

Roxanne smiled, quite happy with her ability to solve the problem of the ball. This way, no one was left out or put in an awkward situation. At the the sound of his teasing, Roxanne playfully narrowed her eyes at him, nudging him gently in the ribs. “Scorpius Malfoy.. I thought you would know me better then that by now!” Leaning in, Roxanne stole a quick kiss before chuckling, “Maybe I am not like other Ravenclaws? Would I really be out here in the middle of the night if I were?”

"Hmm... genre? I don't know," he contemplated his options, but he wasn't quite sure what those were. When he was younger, and probably up to the summer before his fifth year, Scorpius was quite an avid reader. He didn't really read muggle books, like at all, but he used to read a little bit of everything that any regular wizarding library or bookstore could offer. "I think I'll just read the backs of the books until I find one that speaks to me. And then I'll bug you to explain to me the things I don't get."

Scorpius chuckled a little at Roxanne's next statement. He, of course, wanted Lyra and Roxy to be on good terms, but that was as likely as his making up with Lyra. "I don't mean to say that you're not likable or anything as such, but I don't think Lyra will want to like anyone who has anything to do with me." His parents were a different case though. His father would hardly object to anything as long as it wouldn't have to interfere with his strict relaxation plan. And his mum thought Ravenclaws were Hogwart's best asset, and she liked Roxy, so he knew she wouldn't object. "I don't think my parents will have anything against you staying over, but I'll check with Mum just in case."

One of the reasons Scorpius hardly ever reported people who were wandering around after curfew --as long as they were only wandering-- was that he didn't really see it as rule-breaking. "I'm glad that you're not like other Ravenclaws. I mean, some of you can be so painfully rigid; it's almost maddening." And it wasn't like Scorpius was a particularly fun person, but that's how extremely boring some of those Ravenclaws could be.

Night Wanderings II Roxanne and Scorpius

Roxanne settled against Scorpius, shifting her head so that she could turn around and kiss him on the cheek as he spoke. A small smile of amusement came to her lips as he tried to guess the plot of The Great Gatsby, “Not quite.. Gatsby is the surname of one of the book’s lead characters. It’s about a Muggle journalist who travels to New York City and meets a man named Jay Gatsby- a mysterious millionaire who has been in love with a socialite, Daisy, who is married to another man. It’s quite sad, actually.. but it’s an amazing story.”

"I understand.. let me know if she is okay with it?" She tilted her head slightly as he kissed her neck, slowly turning her head so that she could look at Scorpius, gently bringing her forehead to rest against his. Roxanne hated to see him upset or distressed.. and she knew just how much Lyra and his family meant to him. "Of course I would.. I would love to be with you over the holidays.." She replied honestly, a small smile forming. Scorpius was the first guy she had ever been with that had even wanted to try and introduce her to his family.. it was new and foreign ground for her.

Roxanne took a breath in and remained thoughtful for a moment before nodding her head. She had already arranged the time with her father. Besides, she knew that Dominique generally had a difficult time among other Slytherins.. so perhaps going to Clare’s party with one could help with that- or at least give her a good evening. “I am sure.. besides, I’ve already arranged the time with Dad. Why don’t I see if I can meet you at the party halfway through? Although, it may be a little over halfway by the time I get there. That way, you’re not bailing on Dom either.. We could always sneak down to Hogsmeade afterward and go for drinks ?”

Scorpius was rather enjoying how he and Roxy were gently fondling with each other. It was subtle, but to Scorpius, it was demonstrative enough. As Roxanne explained the actual outline of the aforementioned Great Gatsby, he realised that his initial conjecture was a shot in the dark and that if he attempted to navigate that bookstore on his own, he wouldn't be able to make heads or toes out of it. "Hmm... I still think the title would suit a story about a creature of some sort. But it does sound like an interesting story. Do you think it should be the first one I tackle?"

Wrapping his arms around Roxy's waist, Scorpius locked his lips with Roxanne's for a brief moment. "Alright then. I'll talk to Lyra, and let you know. She better not have a problem with it or I might hate her a little for it." Scorpius always had an openly honest relationship with his parents. With his mother chaperoning over his house, she got to know of almost everything Scorpius engaged. But even if that wasn't the case, Scorpius wouldn't have had much to conceal. As for girlfriends... His parents knew Cassandra well enough ever since she was a kid and her coming over to Malfoy Manor was done as casually as she scrutinised each of Scorpius's moves. And Roxanne was one of the nicest people Scorpius had yet encountered and he was sure his parents wouldn't mind having her over. Besides, he already knew what his mother thought of Roxy.

"Yeah, we could definitely do that," Scorpius said with a nod, slightly relieved he didn't have to make a choice. "But sneaking out? I thought Ravenclaws were sticklers to the rules...?" He sported an amused smile as he knew how largely misleading those house-based stereotypes were. Sure, they held some truth, but not always. He was just a bit surprised to find out that Roxy was one of those odd ones out.

"It’s a deal then." She flashed him a wicked grin, and extended her right arm for a handshake, wondering if she should have sealed-the-deal with a spit pact. That’s what she and Freddy always did whenever they schemed together. Thinking of Freddy, only left her thoughts to trail in one direction — to his younger sister, Roxanne. Scorpius had explained that Roxy knew about this ‘almost-friend’ situation, but Dominique somehow really doubted Roxanne knew what she was getting involved with. It was a well-known fact that the cousins didn’t get along — though, not from Dominique’s want of trying. Roxanne was embarrassed to be associated with her elder cousin, as plain and simple as that. So… it was curious that she would be so readily agreeable to Scorpius taking Dominique to the ball; why would she want her boyfriend associating with Hogwarts’ resident outcast? The Black Sheep of the Weasley family?

Dominique made a mental note to ponder the thought more carefully later. It was cliche to say she was swept up in Scorpius conversation — but her internal doubts and insecurities did seem to fade ever so slightly when he talked to her.

"Don’t ask her, I’m not a moron. I’ll find something, yeah? I won’t look too weird and scary, I promise.” She snorted slightly, pulling out her cigarette pack from her pocket and lighting up, “You’re far too modest. You should talk to my cousin Lily more, she’ll give you tips on properly lapping-up praise. She’s sort of an expert.”

"It's a deal!" Scorpius said with a grin, flying closer to Dom and taking her extended hand in his for a brief shake before retracting it, coiling his hand around the broom's handle and lowering the broom to the ground so that he was practically standing on the ground. He stepped aside, letting the broom fall to the ground and stood by Dominique. "So, 10 galleons on Dominique Weasley arriving to the ball with a dashing young man?"

As Dominique procured her cigarette pack, Scorpius watched her intently. He noticed how automatic it all seemed, as though her hands were working on their own accord. "As you like; I'm only trying to help," he said with a shrug, his nose wrinkling involuntarily as she puffed out a cloud of smoke. Scorpius had always heard of things like cigarettes, but Dominique was the first person he'd seen them with. Sometimes, he wondered why he didn't report her for doing things as such. Maybe he just found how different, how dangerous she was ravishing...? A refreshing deformity in his repetitively bleak world of inflexible rules and restrictive boundaries? There was probably something else too, something that made him find Dominique more interesting than others who engaged in similar... well, activities. But he couldn't quite put his finger on it.

"I do spend some time with your cousin Lily; she's really competitive and I like how challenging she could be. Her confidence makes it all the more interesting," he told her with an assuring nod.
