Lilia Vanini Boutique
Lilia Vanini (what a fantastic name!) found her inspiration to create, design and learn in Venice Italy, an amazing historical city bursting with handmade goods and creative people. She describes it as "a glorious and wonderful city [full of] elegance, romanticism and mystery.” After living there Lilia was inspired to start her handmade fashion boutique featuring attractive shoulder bags, infinity scarves, headbands and pillows. Her choices of gorgeous fabrics, colors and styles all seem to be influenced by her time spent in the magical city.
Growing up surrounded by creative craftswomen, Lilia understood the power behind handmade goods. To her, “handmade is a personal expression, the satisfaction of a need,” and a way to communicate love and passion to others. Her most precious handmade object is an unfinished knitted work that her mother left. Watching both grandmothers sew and her aunt knit luxury goods as a child have influenced Lilia’s designs, giving her a strong foundation and understanding of both knitting and sewing.

Lilia has three Etsy shops: The first, Lilia Vanini Boutique features her sewn bags, scarves, head bands and home décor. The second includes original knit and crochet patterns. Her third shop is dedicated to fashion accessories with hand printed text and is a collaboration with her husband Mario. She currently spends her time between New York and Peru with plans on moving back to Italy in the near future!

Simple is Pretty
Everything changed for Sandra when she became a stay at home mom. It was her son’s sensitive skin that prompted her to find alternative solutions for doing laundry. “My goal was to reduce the amount of harsh chemicals in my home including laundry detergent and dryer sheets. I began making my own homemade recipes and through time I have found solutions that work.”
In Sandra’s online store, Simple is Pretty Shop, you can find a variety of goodies used to freshen up your home. Her wool dryer balls are of the highest quality because she uses 100% wool yarn right to the core. When you place the wool balls into your dryer they tumble around providing extra air circulation while absorbing moisture to dry your clothes quicker! The added bonus is that they can be used as an eco-friendly alternative to dryer sheets and fabric softener. Place a few drops of your favorite essential oils (coming soon to her online shop!) on the wool and enjoy your fresh smelling laundry. If you are the DIY type, Sandra has a ebook on how to make a set for yourself.
When I asked Sandra what her inspiration was she replied “everything around me gives me inspiration. I love using simple and natural sources to create beautiful and useful home items.” Her lavender sachets are made from organic cotton and organic lavender buds. She describes a number of uses for the sweet smelling lavender: place them under your pillow at night for a restful night sleep, use them to replace dryer sheets or place them in your clean linens and clothes to keep them smelling fresh.
Sandra is a wealth of information herself. In her blog Simple Is Pretty she shares unique home ideas like DIY decor, safer cleaning solutions and organizational hints. When I look through Sandra's blog everything seems to share the same crisp, clean and natural style. Each project Sandra writes about and every handcrafted item she makes gives me the feeling that she truly is living her motto “Simple is Pretty.”

Hey lovelies! I’m a really eco-friendly person, so when I heard about this store, I was really excited. Lively Leaf Designs uses upcycled rubber bicycle tires as well as fresh water pearls to create very unique, classy, and modern jewelry!
I chose the Upcycled Rubber Feather Pendant Necklace for its simplicity and elegance. It shipped so quickly, I received my package in just over a week! Now let me talk about the package and the shop owner Melissa. Melissa puts so much care, effort, and quality into each of her pieces and the overall package. Every package includes some business cards, a thank you discount code (which you can use in her Etsy store), a small card describing her eco-friendly packaging (recyclable, reusable, biodegradable, and more!), and the chosen jewelry piece, which comes in a beautiful earthy-coloured box. Featured Artist: Caitlin Ratliff of A Stitch Off
Caitlin Ratliff is a self-taught seamstress with a natural eye for pattern, color and detail. I had the privilege of interviewing Caitlin online to find out more about her love of sewing and how her Etsy shop A Stitch Off started. In her shop you can find a variety of her handmade designs, including gorgeous quilts, fun children’s clothing and funky home décor items like cloth napkins.
From an early age Caitlin made little projects out of scrap fabric just for fun. “I was attracted to it because I love using my hands to work, and I enjoy the aspect of assembly – it’s quite like a puzzle, getting all the pieces to fit correctly to turn into something beautiful.”
Children’s literature holds a special place in Caitlin’s heart and is one of her main sources of inspiration. She was an English major in college and authors such as Roald Dahl and Maurice Sendak capture her imagination. The childlike enthusiasm found in those stories is mirrored in her choice of whimsical fabric and bright colors. “I like to think my napkins could fit in perfectly at a tea with the Mad Hatter.”
Through her love of reading Caitlin taught herself the methods and skills by researching in any book on sewing she could find. She told me she simply learned by doing through trial and error. It was in 2009 she started to pursue her sewing more seriously and in 2013 she opened her online Etsy shop A Stitch Off.
One can see the passion Caitlin has for sewing, especially when you see her quilts, they are her absolute favorite thing to make. “I greatly enjoy designing quilts, it's lots of fun experimenting with shapes and colors until I settle on something that looks great. And they're such large projects to complete, I love the sense of accomplishment when it's finally finished.”
Caitlin’s work is stunning and unique. Her sweet baby girl skirts and matching headbands would make for a thoughtful baby shower gift. Her cloth napkins I can picture using at my own dinner table! Featured Artist: Hunter Love of Rustic Silk Soaps
When I came across Hunter’s beautiful shop full of gorgeous soaps, body butters and sugar scrubs I immediately could tell how much she loves creating her sweet smelling concoctions. Her attention to detail along with the highest quality of ingredients is what sets her shop apart.
Living in a small town, Hunter first discovered soap making through the Internet: her first foray into soap-making came through a melt and pour kit for glycerin soap she found online. It was eventually the cold process soaps that got her hooked, and she began hours of research, tests and experiments (looking like a mad scientist!) to form her one of a kind creations.
Hunter describes herself as a creative type and over the years she has dabbled in jewellery making, ceramics, pottery and painting. One of her favorite parts of making her soaps is playing with and swirling the colors. While she waits for the soap to harden she enjoys making body butters. Everything in her shop is like a miniature work of art!
The list of ingredients used in Rustic Silk Soaps is literary mouth-watering. Hunter uses the highest quality and most luxurious ingredients she can find like mango butter, avocado oil and sweet almond oil. I especially like how Hunter uses raw ingredients whenever possible, like raw honey and beeswax from a local beekeeper and fresh herbal teas from her own garden!

Lively Leaf Designs
Melissa Pedersen of Lively Leaf Designs, is no stranger to creating one of a kind jewellery. In 2009 she received her bachelors of fine arts majoring in Jewellery and Metals from the Alberta College of Art and Design. Designing comes natural to her as she challenges herself to find the right materials, the right balance and look in each pendant, necklace or pair of earrings she makes.
Her work has evolved over the years from more traditional silver smithing techniques to experimenting with found materials and pearls.
"The idea to try something new came through one of my biggest life changes, recently I became a full time stay at home mom! I love making jewellery but have had little time to get in the silversmithing studio. I needed a medium I could work with at home, even at the kitchen table with my little guys."
Bicycle inner tube was an eco firendly material that Melissa had been experimenting with for a while. She describes it as being very tactile, durable and lightweight, actually a perfect material for creating comfortable jewellery.
"It’s such an inspiring material. I am excited that I can take something destined for the landfill and turn it into a unique statement of individuality or even a precious token of love."
It is the tension between the natural and man made that Melissa finds inspiring. The edgy black rubber looks almost industrial, especially contrasted by the femininity and softness of the freshwater pearls.
Each Lively Leaf Jewellery piece is hand cut or manually die cut, after being thoroughly cleaned (removing 99% of that rubbery smell you might associate with inner tube!) The jewellery is handcrafted using solid stainless steel wire, which will not tarnish with time, and real white freshwater pearls.
