Everyone’s favorite 1920s Australian female detective returns in her first feature film! Miss Phryne Fisher (Essie Davis) takes fans of the internationally successful television series on an exhilarating new journey of mystery and mayhem through exotic 1920s British Palestine to the opulence of grand London mansions.

Very exciting movie news this morning. Film festival season is upon us, which is a great time for movies to get some buzz before their theatrical release. Palm Springs International Film Festival has announced that Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears will be screening THREE times at the Film Festival!!!!! That’s right, Palm Springs, CA, USA! Tickets go on sale first to AMEX card holders and then to film festival members, but to the general public later this month. Let’s get a group together to go!

One month to go!

It’s hard to believe, but there is only one month until the 2019 Miss Fisher Con! The Adventuresses are incredibly busy getting everything ready on this end, and we’re sure you are too! Amidst all the excitement and panic-packing, just a few reminders:

Masquerade

Friday evening’s dinner and masquerade is always a blast, and we can’t wait to see what you have in store for us this year! You can compete for prizes or simply strut your stuff on the catwalk. Registration is open to all con attendees–check out the 2019 Con page for all the information!

Hotel

Due to high demand, we have sold out all the double rooms at the Westin! We have secured double-queen rooms at the San Jose Marriott (directly across the street from the Westin) for a special rate of US$249 per night. But be quick–this is only good until July 8th!

Black Scarab

There are still tickets available for our Saturday evening murder-mystery event The Curse of the Black Scarab. Transportation to and from the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum is included, and it promises to be great fun!

Can’t make the whole weekend? Have a friend who wants to join us for the dinner and masquerade Friday evening? Both one-day and dinner-only tickets can be purchased via our website. Tickets involving meals are available until July 12th, so don’t delay!

 Miss Fisher Con 2019 will be held July 25-257th at The Westin San Jose in San Jose, California. Registration is currently available to ACotA members and non-members. Can’t make the whole weekend? The Adventuresses have been renovating!

If you’ve been over to missfishercon.com over the last few weeks, you might have noticed that our website has had a make-over! We have partnered with Wild Apricot, the most widely used membership database software for nonprofits, in order to improve your experience and make it easier than ever to join, connect, and communicate with your fellow adventuresses and adventurers!

On the new website, non-members will be able to see selected content, read information about registering for Miss Fisher Con, and sign up for our newsletter like they had before. Members will be able to renew your membership dues, register for Miss Fisher Con and other regional events, find our members-only Slack, and see more members-only content than ever! In the coming months, we will add forums where members can connect with other con attendees for ride and room shares, regional events, and more.

This year, ACotA members will be given first access to Miss Fisher Con registration at a discounted price, so now is the time to renew your membership or sign up for the first time! Tickets for members go on sale next month, so keep your eyes on your inboxes for more details! Excitement Abounds!

There was a buzzing in the adventuresses clubhouse this week when Every Cloud shared a photo of a costume in progress on their Facebook page and Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears director Tony Tilse shared his travels on Instagram (we’ve been loving the location scouting photos too!). After a year of excited anticipation–the Kickstarter opened September 15th last year–it’s hard to believe that filming is just around the corner!

The Adventuresses would just like to take a moment and thank Every Cloud and the cast for their tireless work to bring Miss Fisher back to our screens, and shout out to the wonderful fans who have filled the Phryne hiatus with so much joy.

Here’s to the new adventure, darlings!

Even before it became the heart of the Silicon Valley, San Jose had a long history as a gateway to the Greater San Francisco Bay Area, and we can’t wait to explore it with you. Home to such attractions as the Winchester Mystery House and the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum–which not only houses the largest display of Egyptian artifacts in the western US, but also has a planetarium and two rose gardens!–there is something for everyone.

If anyone tries to tell you that Shakespeare is stuffy or boring or highbrow, just remember that the word “nothing” was used in Elizabethan era slang as a euphemism for “vagina”. 

Shakespeare has a play called “Much Ado About Nothing”, which you could basically read in modern slang as “Freaking Out Over Pussy”. And that’s pretty much exactly what happens in the play.

It’s also a pun with a third meaning. There’s the sex sense of much ado about “nothing”, there’s the obvious sense that people today see, and then there’s the fact that in Shakespeare’s day, “nothing” was pronounced pretty much the same as “noting”, which was a term used for gossip. So, “Flamewar Over Rumors” works as a title interpretation, too.

The reason we call Shakespeare a genius is that he can make a pussy joke in the same exact words he uses to make biting social commentary about letting unverified gossip take over the discourse.
