I know it's 10 AM and this isn't going to hit my peak audience but I wanted to put it out there -- I've been super busy lately and I've been a little cagey about why, so here's an explanation. I have a 5 month old child now! And a 11 week old puppy, as of today. My 9 year old dog's other 9 year old doggy companion died recently, so I also have a grieving pup to deal with.

I still exist, and I have many good intentions to post more here and write more stuff up and many other things, but simply put -- I'm not home alone doing nothing but reading / writing / working all day. I don't have a lot of time for things that aren't family-maintenance.

I'm hoping when my kiddo gets a little more independent I can get back into the swing of things, but that may take months, even years. I'm doing my best to post here every so often, so thanks for sticking with me.

I was going through my giant folklore Word document, and I came to a conclusion - folklorically, Scotland is three countries stuck together.

The first is the Lowlands, whose folklore has a lot in common with that of Northern England. The second is the Highlands and Hebrides, which is closest to Irish folklore. And the third is the Shetland and Orkney Islands, whose folklore is mostly of Scandinavian extraction. (This corresponds nicely to the three languages historically spoken in Scotland; Scots, Scots Gaelic and Norn).

For example, faeries in the Lowlands tend to be small ugly old men with brown skin, often in improvised clothing - a lot like the hobthrusts and hobgoblins of northern England. But in the Highlands and Hebrides, faeries tend to be beautiful people dressed in green, like in Ireland. While over in the Orkneys and Shetlands there are trows, who, as the name suggests, are much like trolls.

Even with shared creatures, there are significant differences. Selkies (sea spirits in the form of seals who turn into humans) are from the Orkneys and Shetlands and known to be dangerous, while their Gaelic counterparts, roanes, aren't. The kelpie of the Lowlands, each-uisge of the Highlands and Hebrides and nuggle of the Orkneys and Shetlands are all aquatic shapeshifting horse spirits, but the kelpie and each-uisge are killers while the nuggle is only a prankster.

Do I have a point? Not really. But I do think this is interesting.

things you're probably doing wrong in your witch/pagan practice

These types of lists are usually trying to sell you something, whether it's a course to "teach you the right way" or an ideology.

People who are obsessed with controlling your practice are often involved in the occult/spiritual community because they're more interested in having a cultish following rather than real spiritual development.

That's not to say there aren't any rules in witchcraft/paganism, but these rules aren't universal. Each practice comes with a personal set of rules, often unique to the practitioner.

Don't let others define how your practice should look like. Experiment and find what does and doesn't work for you!

However, if you aren't working to decolonize your practice and are actively disrespecting a practice, you are doing something wrong.

Breaking my hiatus to bring everyone’s attention to the fact that Cornwall is now attempting to be officially recognised as a nation within the United Kingdom.

Kernow has its own language, culture, history and identity. The language was forcibly removed by the English until the last monolingual speaker died in 1777–her name was Dolly Pentreath. It has existed as a kingdom before England had ever existed. Historically, Cornwall has been a place exploited for minerals and resources and labour. Currently, it still is. There are now ghost towns where once thriving fishing villages stood (Mousehole, Pentreath’s home, was one of these). Cornwall is now a playground for second home owners who drive up house and rent prices and drive out permanent residents and workers. Local businesses go out of business and struggle to stay afloat when the influx of tourists come who only purchase from supermarkets, putting nothing into the local economy. There is a long, long and often very gruesome and bloody history behind this—leaders of rebellions executed all the way into 1715.

If you are in the UK, and sign the petition to get this to a debate in Parliament.

Someone brought up water for damn good reason. I don’t think anyone really understands. Cornwall literally has no choice other than SouthWest Water for water supply, a basic human right which should be nationalised anyways. But how many people are aware that SW Water use Cornwall to dump massive amounts of sewage into the sea?

And we’re all aware that when the government announced its budget, it conveniently didn’t mention Cornwall once. It in fact avoided the South West. But absolutely no funding gets to Kernow.

Between the lack of British government funding, celebrities buying multi million pound mansions in Cornwall and leaving them empty 3/4 of the year, all the seasonal workers who companies hire from other counties to work during the tourist season, it should be obvious why Kernow should want some self-governance. It’s been fucked for centuries, a play pen for rich people, a novelty with their silly little language and silly little traditions, just look how quaint. Meanwhile the actual Cornish people swim in their shit and pay for their second homes while being driven out of theirs.

Fun facts! Cornish is the closest living relative to Welsh, linguistically speaking - the revival has a fascinating history, and at the start they used Welsh and Breton to help 'fill in the gaps' to work out what orthography and pronunciations they'd lost (though by now a new and fully Cornish orthography has been developed). I know a few Cornish speakers now, and although the two languages aren't quite mutually intelligible, they come very close. Reading and hearing it always makes me feel like I'm having a stroke lol, so similar and yet not quite close enough...

Crucially, no Cornish person I've ever met considers themselves English. And, every time I have ever been to Cornwall, I've been met with delight when I've said I'm Welsh. One pub we went in even had Welsh rugby memorabilia on the walls, because they support Wales over England. There's a real cousins vibe, and a definite Celtic-not-English identity

Godfamily is a parallel to godspouse! It is a platonic term used to describe familial relationships between humans and deities, whether those relationships are soul-deep or adoptive (i.e., some deities help craft someone's soul, thus becoming a figurative "parent" to that person, while other deities simply adopt someone the same way a human would)

Familial relationships are often lumped under "godspouse," which can be frustrating and confusing for someone who wants to differentiate their romantic from platonic relationships. Some people do believe human morality is irrelevant in this context; therefore, people can have romantic relationships with their divine "parents." I don't know how common this is - I've only seen it discussed!

Hades and Persephone are my parents. I call them mom and dad, and even Dionysus refers to them with respect for their role in my life. Semele and Zeus are my "in-laws" according to Dionysus, a role they've both acknowledged, but again I don't know how common that is! Dionysus is very big on family and it influences how he curates my relationships with other spirits. I also have something called a "soul fragment" from Ariadne, which I personally conceptualise as a piece of her soul woven into mine for a particular purpose (someone else may describe it differently)

I don't know what resources exist for godfamily but hope to be more open about it myself
