Saw a video about "omg why do so many FEMALES suddenly have 25 ALTERS" that of course was full of crap, lmao. But instead of wasting my time there in the comments, we thought we'd take a minute here.
Plurality, and disorders like DID, are real. That's a non-negotiable place to start. You can think it's weird all you want, you can questions the hows and whys of it, whatever, but it's not "misdiagnosed personality disorders", "delusions", or "tiktok induced hallucinations" or whatever the hell people like this think.
Secondly, it's not 'sudden'. Accounts of plurality go back as far as the 1500s at least. That's just recorded accounts. We've always been here! We're not a "tumblr thing" or a "tiktok thing".
It's not even RARE. Even at the usual 1% tossed out there, that's over 70 million people. That's more people than in the entire UK.
The only reason it seems sudden is the same reason why there's "suddenly" more people who are autistic, or have ADHD: awareness and education. More people realizing it's a thing, and realizing "that sounds like me", is gonna make it seem "suddenly" more common.
And sure, social media plays a role. But not because social media "causes" it, but because a LOT MORE people are on social media-- and a LOT MORE people use social media to spread awareness on issues. This isn't fucking rocket science. This shouldn't still be such a big "golly I wonder what's going on here" especially with younger MDs.
Not touching people calling women "females", gee I wonder why a phenomena linked heavily to trauma would affect women (cis or not) and AFAB folks more. HUH. TOTAL MYSTERY. But also, women are more likely to go to therapy and figure shit out! It likely affects more cis men than numbers suggest.***
*** Also gender is fucking complicated and not binary, so splitting things into "men vs women", and even "AFAB vs AMAB", will never be sufficient. It leaves out a lot of trans, nonbinary, and intersex folks.
On top of it, the rhetoric of "if it was REAL these people would be HIDING IT and not posting it on tiktok" is such shit, lol. Ah yes. If you have something going on, you will be hiding it in shame! 🙄 No one EVER talks about things they have going on that impact literally ever area of their life!
Plural folk talk about it because they don't want to hide. It's nothing to be afraid or ashamed of. They share stuff about their system, they show switches on film, they connect with others like them, because it's their lives. They want to make it less stigmatized.
Again, this isn't rocket science.
Anyways.
Avoid "Dr" Hannah Spier. Who, besides this, calls herself the "antifeminist psychologist" and follows/boosts content from transphobes, terfs, people who are "anti woke ideology", Turning Point USA members, alt right grifters, and claims "autism was hijacked by narcissists".
Lmao. ok.jpeg
Images under the cut to show y'all what we mean, got a terrible migraine right now so no image descriptions currently, but will try to add them later.
