Dream, A Little ||

He could have played the night away, but shifts came and went for Elijah, and they all ended eventually. Tonight he had one song left. Maybe two if he went for the shorter ones. Attention spans were not what they once were, not these days, not these people.

Elijah had decided on the longer song, one last melody lingering in the air after he’d stopped moving his fingers across the ivory keys that he knew and loved so well. He loved them more than he loved anything else at the moment. No romantic entanglements. No personal connections barring the people who knew and spoke to regularly at the bar. And that could hardly be called a connection, since he spent precious little time with them outside his working hours.

The last notes played and he glanced up in time to see the big tipper from last week approaching. His brows arched up and he stood, his hand reaching into the bowl atop the piano that held the night’s tips, plucking the bills neatly from inside and folding them to put into his pocket.

This close, Elijah could feel something, inside of him. It stirred. Came awake and made him feel a faint roll of nausea as the evil that resided inside stretched and reached for something. He pushed it down, shaking the feeling off and forcing a smile to the man that had tipped him last week. “Thank you,” he said, it was the simplest. He could not deny he played well. “Though, I never did get a chance to thank you last week. I had not even seen you listening, but I must have moved you for you to leave me such a gift,” he murmured, closing the distance between them as some faint sense of deja vu tried to rise up.

Perhaps it was the lack of distance between them that made the Hollow inside of Klaus jolt, but for a split-second all the careful practicing he’d done over the past week slipped, and he very nearly retreated when Elijah neared. It took all of his control to keep the darkness at bay, fingers clenching and unclenching at his sides as his brother closed the distance between them.

In the old days, Klaus would’ve met him halfway, would’ve embraced him in greeting after such a long while apart, but for now it was all he could do to keep control of the Hollow, picturing his daughter’s smile in his mind’s eye. “No thanks are necessary,” Klaus replied. “I have always thought myself a patron of the arts, and though my own talents lie in painting, I can recognize good music when I hear it.”

He hesitated, gaze flickering towards the nearly-empty bar and then back again at Elijah. 

“Niklaus,” he said, offering his hand to shake. A less reckless man would have been grateful for the small contact that they’d already had and left it at that, but the chance to be in his brother’s presence was too great a temptation. The Hollow was quiet for the moment, its oppressive presence still, and Niklaus seized the chance before he could talk himself out of it.

“Perhaps you’ll allow me to buy you a drink?” he asked. “It’s been some time since I’ve encountered a musician of your talent; so much of what becomes popular nowadays is pure noise.” A self-deprecating smile softened the statement, and he inclined his head towards the bar.

Charlotte had spent most of the remainder of the week staying clear of Klaus’s territory. Granted, most of things she had planned on doing (partying, drinking, dancing) was in the French Quarter, which was Klaus’s territory anyway. So, she made sure she was on her best behavior the whole time, causing as little trouble as possible and making sure not to leave messes when she fed.

Being in environments like this made her think back to her days with Klaus. Their days were usually spent somewhere in Chicago, a place so expensive she wouldn’t dream about looking at lit, let alone stepping foot inside. He took her to shows, to art galleries, fancy dinners, and their nights…oh, their nights. He had been her first everything, beginning to end, and her joke about him ruining her for the rest of the male population hadn’t been entirely a joke. She highly doubted anyone could compete with him, that was partly the reason why she hadn’t taken a lover since…the biggest reason always giving her trouble when she tried moving past the old vampire.

The weekend was growing near, and Charlotte wanted to try every bar they had in the French Quarter. The one she had her sights on recently wasn’t as big as Rousseau’s, but she heard the music was great, and the bartender had a tendency for slight of hand tricks for anyone who asked. It didn’t seem too busy from a quick glance from across the street, so she quickly made her way towards it, hoping to get a seat at the bar.

What she walked in on was the epitome of weird, and, of course, Klaus Mikaelson was directly in the middle of it all. She froze in the doorway for a moment, gathering her bearings, before slowly approaching the group of witches, hoping they wouldn’t suspect her of being a vampire just yet.

“Alright, we all know he can be an ass sometimes,” she began, holding her hands up in a peaceful gesture. “But there has to be a peaceful solution to this, whatever it is you have against him. No need to destroy this nice little bar, yeah?”

Klaus had always prided himself on not needing others to get him out of a bind, but he would be lying if he said that seeing his progeny did not give him some semblance of relief. Regardless of whatever else happened, any vampire he sired had a vested interest in making sure he lived, and he’d be damned if he didn’t take advantage of the boon that Charlotte’s presence presented.

“Get out of here, girl,” the dark-haired witch spat. “This isn’t your business unless you make it so.”

"I vote for the latter,” Niklaus spoke up, pointedly ignoring her in favor of Charlotte. “In fact, as important as my life would be to you, I’d like to point out that killing everyone here would not only be just, but a matter of utmost importance.” Indeed, by attacking Klaus the witches had broken the coven’s pact of peace, and the only true course of action lay in their deaths.

The witch bared her teeth, and he felt their strength slip every so slightly as they realized the threat that the newcomer posed. Klaus was still very much incapacitated, but his facade of politeness fell as abruptly as it had been feigned.

“Charlotte,” he said, and his tone of voice brooked no argument. “Be a dear and kill them all.”

Kol glanced back and forth between Niklaus and Hope. He responded to her like no one else he’d ever seen. Countless lovers, their parents, even their siblings didn’t command him the way that child did. He had chosen a peace treaty so that he could spend more time with her. Kol chuckled at the thought.

“Oh, I understand brother,” he replied. “I understand perfectly. Don’t worry, I have a pocket witch to keep me busy. I won’t be bothering you.” He couldn’t see it though. This was not his brother. His brother would have waged war to keep a stranglehold on the city, and in that way make it safe. It never worked, but if anyone fit the title manchild it was Niklaus.

“Humans are still on the menu, right?” he inquired. “Or are we going full vegan?”

Niklaus held Kol’s gaze a moment longer before nodding, his hackles rising at the thought of his wildest brother wreaking havoc after all his hard work. A pocket witch? Clearly something he needed to investigate further, though Kol hardly needed to know of it.

“Of course they are,” Klaus said. “We want peace, not to be subjugated by our inferiors.” His lips thinned in distaste. “Though there are rules that we abide by now-- a little suggestion from Marcel to keep human agencies turning a blind eye.”

“Do what you will outside of New Orleans,” he continued. “But while you remain here, refrain from killing the locals. There are matters of economy that now concern us, as much as it pains me to admit.” His head throbbed at the thought, but he pushed on, knowing that it was not at all beyond Kol to go on a bender and murder an entire bar’s worth of patrons in a single night.

“I trust you’ll be staying with us here?” Klaus asked, his tone making it clear that it was less a question and more of an order. Infatuation with his little witch or not, it would be easier to keep an eye on his brother if he was, in fact, living in the Abattoir.

He walked with a certain slump to his shoulders, though Stefan tried to keep his posture straight. Not just because of pride, but because the effects of the werewolf bite was slowly beginning to trickle through his bloodstream. He could have sworn there were not one, but two murderous angry hybrid’s standing before him in the clearing.

The vampire listened in silence as Klaus spoke, explaining himself. Explaining the macabre scene littered around them. Bloody corpses. Hopeless cases. It was what they had spent their summer building towards, and now…. what? Stefan flexed his bicep as it pulsed in pain, balling his hand into a fist to see if he could feel anything. The tips of his fingers were already going numb.

“You did what you had to do,” he echoed, knowing that it was about the only thing Klaus would stand to hear right about now. Besides, he didn’t want to risk jeopardizing the chance that the hybrid would cure him.

He tried not to whimper as the other man gripped his forearm. “You have me. For now…” He reminded him, biting his bottom lip as he looked down at the distorted flesh with him. “An injured,” Breath. “dying vampire.”

Shaking his head, he swallowed. “Ray is dead. He fell off a cliff while I was chasing him. Hit his head on a rock.” Bit of a pathetic way to die, but it was the best his brain could come up with on such limited resources. Namely his train of thought… everything was so blurry. Stefan was having a hard time remembering what was real and what wasn’t now. Had he really just seen Damon in the forest? Elena? Or had that been a hallucination?

“If you’re going to kill me, too, then just get on with it.”

The fingers wrapped around Stefan’s wrist tightened instinctively at his words, no part of Klaus accustomed to backing down at a presumed challenge. But even in this state-- judgement clouded by anger and despair-- he was lucid enough to know that Stefan was all he had. Tied to him with little else than his honor, no less, but if there was one thing Klaus could not bear, it was to be alone.

“How fortunate for you that Ray didn’t put up more of a fight,” he said. “Given the state of your condition.” His paranoia would not let him forget that Stefan had not presented him with a body, but given the corpses littered around them, the chances that Ray had survived were so infinitesimal that the matter could be ignored for now.

From the looks of it, the vampire was barely staying on his feet, and Klaus knew he could not delay longer than he already had. Rebekah had once told him that he pushed people too far, and Klaus could not disagree with the assessment. He was well aware of his multitude of sins, and what he was capable of when left unchecked.

His grip was steady against Stefan’s wrist, his hard gaze unwavering as he brought his free hand to his mouth and bit into the vein at his wrist, deep enough so the blood that welled up trickled down in a healthy stream. 

It was rare that Klaus allowed anyone to take blood from him at the source, but a point needed to be made. Oath or not, Stefan lived by his will, and any betrayals forthwith would be met with death.

Finally releasing his hold on Stefan, he offered his bleeding wrist to the vampire, a parody of a king extending favor to his subject.

"Drink.”

This was my fault, all of it. If I’d just accepted Hayley’s pregnancy instead of playing king. I should have listened to you. Instead, my greed and my envy robbed me of my daughter.
