Medieval Signet Ring, 15th-16th Century AD
A late Medieval silver ring probably Eastern European in origin.
With oval bezel, carved with a standing bird, it’s neck and head bent down, a star and crescent before it, the rim of the bezel and shoulders of the ring with decorative border.
Anyway some things to follow when youre a beginner cook:
Don’t constantly shift your food around in the pan if you want to form a crust on it, the less you move it the better.
Don’t be afraid to add water if youre frying up food and the food/sauce looks a bit dry.
Don’t fry up your garlic early on in the cooking process (unless youre making a quick garlic oil) as the garlic flavour can straight up disappear if overcooked for too long and/or the garlic can become bitter if burnt
Don’t overcook your vegetables. Look up recommended cook times for them. Your distaste for vegetables stems from them being overcooked and being poorly seasoned.
Don’t microwave stuff for more than 2 minutes at a time unless you know what you’re doing. Reheating stuff tends to fare better when you mix food between microwaving times since microwaves develop hotspots if you microwave it uninterrupted for too long.
Don’t try cooking everything at the hottest setting. It’s super tempting to have a high flame and do a meal quickly but actually follow directions and cook at medium or low heat.
These are such good tips!! It’s crazy how many adults don’t know some of these- once you learn them you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them
I’m currently in culinary school so I hope you don’t mind if I add a couple tips myself:
Salt and pepper are your bffs, salt especially. Even a little bit of salt can have such an impact on a dish and it helps bring out and amplify all the other flavors in a dish
When you’re cooking green veggies, never EVER cover them. You may have grown up hating broccoli, green beans and brussel sprouts that were limp and that horrid shade of olive puke green. It’s because if you cook or steam green veggies in a covered pot the enzymes and parts of the plant that make it green will break down and turn that nasty shade
Speaking of cooking vegetables, I’m begging you to please please look up and try roasting veggies if you’ve never done it before!! It’s so so easy, it works beautifully with practically any vegetable you can imagine and you can season them however you wish!
My last tip is if you’re going to invest in any sort of kitchenware, have it be a good sharp knife and good quality pots/pans. And if you do end up getting these items, make sure you take good care of them! Most metal kitchenware will last longer if you hand wash them, as opposed to always running them through the dishwasher which will rust them so much faster. So make sure to look up proper care if you’re unsure
And most importantly, don’t be afraid to make mistakes or mess up!!! Even in a professional kitchen accidents happen or things don’t go as planned! Cooking is both a science and an art, and it’s just waiting for you to come be creative and experiment!!!
Have some peer review tags bc they know what they’re talking about.
dont be afraid of cast iron! just rinse and scrub it while its still hot, then dry it off. seasoned cast iron (and theyre usually sold preseasoned) is nonstick and incredibly easy to clean - thats like half the appeal
ppl act like buying cast iron is like having a child, but literally just keep it dry when not in use and dont use soap on it and itll be fine. its not like its fragile and delicate and must be treated with a gentle touch its fuckin solid iron lmao
Why do they even make apps for ADHD. You want me to use my 24/7 handheld immediate distraction device? To manage my 'gets distracted too easily' disorder? Ooooh we developed the perfect tool for managing your anemia. Its hosted in Dracula's castle. 👍
Picked up my phone to consult my task list for today and now I'm reblogging this instead, case in point
i have ADHD! I've learned that the name of the game is to introduce DELAY and FRICTION in the short term, and work out ROOT CAUSES in the long term.
there's an app called one sec which BLOCKS all other apps on your phone. It can also restrict specific apps. It injects a delay in opening the apps - you can customise the message and delay length.
Android (One UI, maybe just samsung, I'm not sure) phones have settings that can whitelist specific apps during specific times or when a particular "mode" is active. This is under Modes and Routines.
In my experience these are the only ADHD apps that work.
More ADHD pro tips: uninstall as many apps as possible
Set your browser to close tabs automatically after a certain amount of time inactive (mine is 7 days I think). If you REALLY need the open tab, bookmark it.
If you really need the delay, set your phone/ computer browsers to clear cookies daily. This will force you to need to log in to websites every day. This introduces DELAY and FRICTION between you and the easy, habitual distractions.
DELAY and FRICTION are short term solutions. The habits run pretty deep and humans can get used to anything; you'll figure out ways to go around the blockers you put in place in time, and you'll need to create new blockers. Use the time to address the longer term ROOT CAUSES, because that's what's gonna actually make it stick.
ROOT CAUSES is harder. What would you rather be doing, if you weren't on your phone? Journal. Journal a lot. Take long solitary walks (LEAVE PHONE AT HOME!) and try to figure out what you really think, what you really want, when you're not on your phone.
I find I tend to use the phone to Escape. I have worked pretty hard to build a life I don't always want to escape from, as well as some mindsets. I know another very common mode is Seeking, and whatever you're trying to find in Phone chances are it's not there.
You need to retrain your brain to try looking somewhere other than Phone for whatever you're Seeking. This is hard. Might take forever, might never entirely break the habit. But the degree and frequency of me being on my phone for way too long has reduced a lot, in a relatively quick timeframe (1-2 weeks). Don't let slips become slides here.
Genuinely I think a lot of the apps marketed for ADHD are scams targeting a population which is most likely to forget they signed up for a free trial and won’t have the attention span to go through the cancellation process. There’s simply no other justification for a glorified to-do list app with a premium version that costs 30 dollars a month.
I will second One Sec, though! The delay on opening apps is helpful when you’re stuck in that loop of opening an app, closing it, and then immediately opening it again. Plus they have ways of blocking apps that are harder to get around than the built in screen time limitations.
The other thing that’s been huge for me is turning off viewing history on YouTube. Without tailored m recommendations it’s a lot easier to mindlessly move on to the next thing, but the biggest benefit is that it breaks shorts. You can still view them on specific channels, and they come up in searches, but you can’t get the infinite scroll. Also with times being what they are, denying a company any data you can feels like a small win!
I am a HUGE proponent for the app ScreenZen. It is extremely customizable and has a ton of different applications of friction and delay that I can set at different times for different apps. For example, apps that have short form video that I might want to use for something else, like Facebook and Instagram, are set so that I can use them for an unlimited amount of time BUT every seven minutes I get cut off to a screen with a message I chose (a cute picture of my kitty and the phrase is this how you wanted to use your time?) and have to choose to open it again. That means if I go to find something on marketplace but get sucked into reels, I’ll get nudged out of it after seven minutes and I’ll have a chance to regroup and try again until I do the thing I needed to do. I can do this as many times as I want. However, I can also change the settings to limit how many opens I have in a day, or how long I have to wait between opens.
I like to read fanfiction in bed and will stay up all night. If I have it hard block after a certain time, I’ll get all grumpy and defiant and decide I don’t need to listen to that and turn it off. So instead, starting at a certain time, I can only open the app for fifteen minute increments, but as many of them as I want. I have to wait 12 seconds between opens and a screen comes up to encourage me to do a round of box breathing, and then I can open Firefox again. After 8 opens, I have a new setting to only allow five minutes at a time, AND each time I open the app it adds 10 seconds to the wait before I can open it again. That means if I really really want to finish a chapter I can buy the friction gets worse and worse each time until I’m waiting well over a minute to open it again. Usually once it’s over a minute I’m out of “the zone” enough that it’s pretty easy to decide I can stop reading and go to sleep.
Anyway I’m a huge fan, it helps so so much and has dramatically improved my quality of life around phone use.
It is available for apple and android.
side benefit of communal all-gender restrooms is that they may be our best chance to shame cis men into washing their hands
i was in a communal all-gender restroom today and as i was washing my hands a middle-aged man came out of one of the stalls, started to make for the door, clocked me standing at the sinks, and changed course to wash his hands with a real hangdog look on his face
do me a favor and plz reblog with your five most recently used non-face, non-hand, non-heart emojis

Okay, as much as I love Rocky extending Grace's life without telling him, consider: Rocky *does* tell Grace, Grace just then somehow manages to like. Horrendously misinterpret what the treatment is actually for. Like.
Eridian Doctor: We went through the human genome and found a bunch of places with old broken DNA repair mechanisms so we came up with a gene editing therapy that fixes them in order to extend your lifespan.
Grace: *flashbacks to when Rocky found out that humans can experience long term effects from lower doses of radiation exposure and Grace wasn't being as careful as he should have been back when they first met because he still thought this was gonna be a suicide mission*
Grace (internally): Oh, so cancer prevention! Got it!
Grace: Sounds good!
*like 100 years later*
Grace: Hey Rocky, how am I not dead yet?
Rocky: ???
its not reccomended amd probably not legal but in a pinch a coyote can be your plus one to most events
i do think theres something sad about how largely only the literature that's considered especially good or important is intentionally preserved. i want to read stuff that ancient people thought sucked enormous balls
Time to take this post entirely too seriously:
I often wonder if this is why you so commonly see the sentiment that we are in an era of uniquely bad literature, or at least that the fact that most books don't have artistic aspirations and are not aiming to be anything other than mindless entertainment is new. In fact what's new is the idea that everything is worth preserving (and also the internet making it easier to preserve it). The dumb artistically unambitious trash books of the past have survived only sporadically, because people thought of them as literally disposable.
When I was in college I had a professor who was an expert on detective fiction. He had a longstanding beef with the idea that "Murders in the Rue Morgue" was the first detective story. He thought that it seemed way too polished to be inventing a new genre, and also that the whole orangutan business had the vibe of someone subverting preexisting audience expectations and maybe engaging in a bit of stealth parody. With the help of some student volunteers, he went trawling through old magazines and newspapers and found hundreds of detective stories from the early 1800s that just hadn't garnered enough individual attention to be remembered. This was because most of them sucked balls. He created an online archive of them, so you too can read these mostly terrible stories.
I've spent a ridiculous amount of time on Project Gutenberg sifting through forgotten old fiction and lemme tell ya. a lot of that stuff sucks ass.
Tremendously comforting, really.
Here's an idea about why kids are so anxious and depressed all the time...the environments kids are in most of the time are very stressful and don't fulfill their needs for play, rest, proper variety of foods, positive social opportunities, and freedom from fear pain punishment etc
Like everyone with any basic understanding of animal welfare knows that if you put an animal in an enclosure that is too crowded, without hiding spots, with no freedom to move around, no ability to avoid harsh and stressful stimuli, and scare it by shouting at it and punishing it, the animal will become stressed and start chewing its own fur off or hurting itself or become sick or unable to eat...
But we expect human children to grow up in these conditions and literally blame them when they develop the exact type of problems that any creature under those conditions would
