bio
Full name: Eponine Rose Dubois
Nickname: Ponine
Birth date: February 29 1812
Eponine was born in the South of France in 1812, her father a wine merchant, and her mother a writer. The pair hadn't been able to have children before her, and she ended up being their own, and she was lavished with attention for it, and never wanted for nothing. But while Ponine was spoilt she didn't show it, helping her father and the men and women he hired to help tend to their vineyards, and care for the animals that they owned. She especially loved her time in the vineyards, caring for the plants, showing extra care and attention if any were not thriving.
When Ponine was 20, she accompanied her parents to Paris, her father arranging to meet a buyer. The mood was tense, whispers of protests, but her and her parents couldn't have foreseen what would happen. Angry shouting, gunfire, barricades being erected blocking them down rue Saint-Martin, caught in between a rebellion and the French army. They begged and pleaded to be let out, but Eponine watched as a young man with a gun shot her parents at point blank range, knocking her unconscious as she screamed.
When she awoke she was far from the rebellion. Far from Paris even, a woman with a soft face sitting by her bed, welcoming her home. She thought she had to be dreaming, but over the coming days, the truth was explained to her - she was a princess of the light faye court, swapped at birth with the Dubois' child so that she could be raised in luxury, and so the human child could be used as a bargaining chip - it was never explained to her why, or to who, or what became of them, only that the child was a boy. The woman that sat with her was Queen - her mother. She had siblings, apparently, but they were raised in the court, and were younger than her.
Not only did they bring her home, but it was one of the Queen's guards, on her orders, that her parents were shot. They ensured that everyone thought Eponine had died with them, so as to not cause alarm. Promising that it was for the greater good, but Eponine couldn't see that. She didn't see a mother, she just saw a murderer and a kidnapper. She didn't care what she was by blood, she would never call this woman her mother. Insisting on calling her only "Your Majesty" or by her first name, she begrudgingly stayed, learning of her heritage, of what she could do, and eventually she left the court, moving to Creation Peaks, and insisting on making her name for herself, and not for who her family were, or for the title that she would one day inherit. There were conditions, of course, Eponine being forbidden from leaving unless she had an advisor, Marshall being strong-armed into the position.
After working at the Three Spoons for a number of years, eventually she took over as owner, insisting on having home grown fruits and vegetables that she would grow herself for their menus, as well as selling the excess to other businesses when available.
personality
sentimental. Eponine has a great deal of affection for the mother and father who raised her, and of her French heritage, stubbornly retaining her French accent, despite not living there in two centuries. She has visited her childhood home once, and though it pained her to find it abandoned, she was able to salvage the wine her father had in the cellar, keeping bottles of it in her own home, and drinking them on her birthday - born on a leap year, she ensures to only drink it on the actual date, so as to make it last as long as possible.
hardworking. She refuses to let the Queen have any part in the person that she has become, and as such, has worked hard for everything she has, especially her job. When taking over as owner, she even gave the previous owner an entire presentation on why she would be best to take over, despite everyone knowing that she was the best option.
gentle. There are two things that Eponine loves the most in the world, and it’s nature and children - one she doesn’t see that she’ll ever have, and the other that are her surrogate children, caring for her fruits, vegetables and flowers with affection, talking to them and encouraging them. She also has a corner of the diner set aside for children to play while their parents are eating, sometimes taking a break from work to sit and tell them stories.
irritable. Despite her gentleness, Eponine can have a short fuse when things are getting to her, liking things to be the way she wants them, desperate to maintain control over her life, after the Queen took so much control over her. She expects high standards from her staff, and while she is as patient as she can be with them, if they continue to mess up, she’s liable to snap at them. She also hates any time she spends with the Queen and her other children, still struggling after 190 years to see them as her family.
sullen. Overall, the longevity of her life, plus the pressure of knowing she’ll one day be Queen of a world that she still struggles to see as her own, Eponine can be brooding and sad in her quieter times. Sometimes she longs to be human, to find someone to settle down, have children with, and grow old with. It makes her somewhat jaded and closed off, hesitant to get too close to anyone.
vindictive. Eponine struggles to forgive and forget, apparent in her refusal to forgive the Queen for leaving her in the first place, for taking her parent’s child, for taking her away from them by their own death. While she has little interest of overthrowing the Queen, she refuses to listen to her, or respect her as others do, still searching to find what happened to her parent’s son, despite being told over and over to drop the subject.
