You’re Eva Stratt, it’s 3 days before the launch. And a miscalculation in the astrophage caused an explosion in your labs that not only killed your 2 scientists for the voyage, but also the 2 pilots and the 2 fucking engineers.

You already have the replacement for the scientist, you had it since you discovered he was coma resistant.

But finding coma resistant people is way harder than it looks when the changes are 1 in 70’000 people.

Luckily, your team is able to find an engineer, an individual charged for an attack that killed 62 people years ago, which left him with only one arm, but apparently despise that he’s still one of the best choices.

The issue is the pilot. Oh and what’s that? Apparently Grace has a twin brother? Who not only this means he’s most likely shares the coma resistant gene, but also was one of the best stuntman ever, and yeah he got a pretty bad back hit but he’s still able to ride and pilot most crafts, is already well built and has plenty of experience in high stake situations?

Ok so you have a middle school teacher, his stunt-man brother an ex terrorist in a tin can 11.9 light years away. None of them will remember anything of course because all of them will be forced to go.

What could possibly go wrong?

Was inspired by the wonderful post by @hailed-marys so me and @sam-i-am-27 got possessed by the demons and came out with this. (NEXT)

* Astrophage is more like a virus that either alters people, causing them to commit crimes or violent acts, or a power that supervillains are starting to use.

* Grace is still a middle school teacher who got bitten by the spider, obviously.

* Adrian is the one who stitched up the suit (the Aunt May of this universe).

* He has all the perks of a normal Spider-Man, but he's still Grace, so he's incredibly clumsy. He does have a super-strong spider sense, and that's what saves him 100% of the time, but he absolutely does not have the agility. When adrenaline kicks in, he can do anything, but otherwise he'll trip over the most ridiculous things.

* He was wearing his yellow raincoat the first time he saved someone, so now he wears it over his suit (along with his white Converse).

* The spider was discovered by SHIELD (which is undercover as a scientific research facility that Grace works for part-time). After the original test subjects (who were only able to survive the spider mutations if they possessed a specific gene) were killed in an attack, Eva delivered the spider to Grace so he could be bitten before other villains got their hands on that power. (My boy gets unwillingly turned into a savior in every universe.)

* Simon is still an ex-convict who, in exchange for his freedom, is asked by the evil company of the day to test a series of mines infected by what appears to be blood from a meteorite (which eventually turns out to be the symbiote Ellie!).

* At first, they wanted to kill each other, but they end up becoming besties.

I love how the entire Grace and Carl relationship in the film was built around these 2 paragraphs alone.

If anyone fits the role of Judas I do firmly believe it's Carl. Stratt was always clear about where she fell with Grace, and though he was her #2 she still kept him at a distance.

Carl, though. With the clapping and in-jokes and bowling in the hardware store? Carl is the one who made the cardinal sin of becoming Grace's friend first.

Grace crediting Carl as an essential co-contributor for figuring out why astrophage is attracted to Venus and for the breeding of astrophage doesn’t get talked about nearly enough.

Scientific contributions and discoveries made by people of color, women, and non-advanced degree holders so often get swept under the rug or erased entirely and Grace made sure Carl was recognized.

It’s one of the first things we see in the movie that shows us as an audience that, at his core, Grace is a good person who isn’t driven by ego. A lot of scientists wouldn’t have thought to credit Carl or would have intentionally downplayed his contribution.

I’m really glad the writers included that in the movie and I’m also curious about people’s thoughts on Carls presence during project Hail Mary before the launch.

I love Carl so much. He wasn't in the book–He's a narrative device so that Grace has a reason to explain his thoughts outloud. He's a stand in. A student for Grace. A person to bounce ideas off of. He's the part of the narration that is filled by the reader in the book. He's us. Carl is there so Grace can take us shopping. So he can show us his theories. So he can work through his hypothesis. Carl is the audience. Carl is you. Carl is me.
